Freedom Cartoonists Foundation To Mark World Press Freedom Day On May 4

The Freedom Cartoonists Foundation will be marking World Press Freedom Day on Monday, May 4 with two events: the inaugural “Cartooning for Freedom” Exhibition and a ceremony to present the 2026 Kofi Annan Courage in Cartooning Award.

“Cartooning for Freedom” Exhibition

The exhibit opens today and runs through May. It features 60 cartoons selected by Freedom
Cartoonists Foundation, in partnership with Cartooning for Peace in Paris. The exhibit topics are: “new empires”, “the impact of artificial intelligence”, and “freedom under attack”.

Cartoonists scheduled to be in attendance include: Gado (Kenya), Jimmy “Spire” Ssentogo (Uganda), Mana Neyestani (Iran), Terry Anderson (Ireland), and Kak (France).

The Kofi Annan Courage in Cartooning Award

The Kofi Annan Courage in Cartooning award is given to cartoonists who “demonstrate exceptional courage and commitment to freedom of expression, often in the face of significant personal risk.” The ceremony is sold out, but you can watch the stream via the organizations website.

In attendance for the ceremony will be Joseph Stiglitz, Nobel Prize in Economics, Former Chief Economist at the World Bank, and Kenneth Roth, Former Executive Director at Human Rights Watch. The program includes a presentation by Marie Heuzé and Patrick Chappatte, Vice Chair and Chair of the Freedom Cartoonists Foundation, a speech by Joseph Stiglitz about the “the state of American democracy”, then finally the presentation of the award.
