Comic strips Obituary

Jane Goodall 1934 – 2025

From the Jane Goodall Institute:

Dr. Jane Goodall, DBE, Founder of the Jane Goodall Institute, UN Messenger of Peace and world-renowned ethologist, conservationist, and humanitarian, has died at the age of 91 of natural causes.

Dr. Jane was known around the world for her 65-year study of wild chimpanzees in Gombe, Tanzania. However, in the latter part of her life she expanded her focus and became a global advocate for human rights, animal welfare, species and environmental protection, and many other crucial issues.

In memory of her life’s work … with respect.

  1. Thanks for this timely tribute to a magnificent scientist. This is the latest reason why The Daily Cartoonist is a must read every day. Congrats and a tip of the green eye shade on your 20th anniversary!

  2. I remember listening to a podcast of Jane Goodall being interviewed (possibly a rebroadcast of an earlier interview, maybe on Science Friday) and she talked about that second Far Side comic (“another blonde hair”). As I remember it, someone she knew reacted indignantly on her behalf, but she thought it was pretty funny.

    1. Goodall put that cartoon on a T-shirt and distributed it to her staff. I’ve heard that more of those T-shirts were sold to raise money for wildlife conservation.

She also wrote an introduction to one of the Far Side compilations, putting her in illustrious company as Stephen King, Robin Williams, and an entymologist (bug scientist).

      1. Well, now I know why that comic came up in the interview!

  3. Nice tribute to a remarkable woman who left the world a better place than she found it.

  4. Our world has been lessened but hopefully, one child will be born to carry on, carry on.

  5. That credit should be Brad “Meltzer,” not “Metzger.”

  6. I met Jane Goodall at the Disney Studio and heard her speak twice, once there, and once in Toronto in 2025. She had a wicked sense of humor and a visible aura of light around her (well, it was visible to me). She was a true saint…and one with a sense of humor.

Jane Goodall’s Foundation objected to Gary Larson’s cartoon with the ‘long blonde hair’ but Goodall found it funny, and retracted their objection.

Jane Goodall was one of my heroes and always will be. She inspired three generations of difficult women.

  7. My apologies, I heard Jane Goodall speak in Toronto in 2024.

  8. You forgot about a 2010 Family Circus strip with recycled art but new caption that mentioned Jane Goodal.

    1. Thanks for the hint Darryl. On July 14, 2010 a few cartoonists responded to a reminder from the Jane Goodall Institute that it would be 50 years since Jane first entered Gombe. Mark Parisi, with Off The Mark shown above, was among the cartoonists responding. Others included
