Skip to commentsCuban cartoonist Humberto Lazaro Miranda Ramirez, better known as LAZ, has passed away at the age of 64 on August 4.
From the Juventude Rebelde (translated) obituary:
Known for his infinite ability to draw Cuban reality from a glance, above all, costumbrista, from a very young age LAZ he was attracted to the drawing and linked to the cartoonists of the weekly Pionero.
He held a Bachelor of Visual Arts and was a member of Dedeté. He was a writer, illustrator, and cartoonist who ventured into costumbrist humor, political satire, general humor and personal caricature.
In his career he participated in more than a hundred collective and personal exhibitions and won almost a hundred national awards and about twenty international awards.

Lambiek notes that since 1982, LAZ’s work has been published in Juventud Rebelde, Tribuna de la Habana, Trabajadores, Palante, Dedeté, Alma Mater, Pionero, Caimán Barbudo, Cuba Internacional, as well as in international publications such as: Eulenspiegel (Germany), Semana Cómica (Nicaragua), Ludas Matyi (Hungary), Rohac (Czech Republic), and La Jornada, Otro más otro, and Chocarreros (Mexico).
