Calvin and Hobbes Portable Compendium

More information about the new editions of the collected Calvin and Hobbes books has been released.

The first set of books collecting Bill Watterson’s timeless Calvin and Hobbes comics in a compact, portable format designed to introduce the timeless adventures of a boy and his stuffed tiger to a new generation of readers. Featuring over 500 comics from the strip’s debut in November 1985 through March 1987, this is the first set in a planned series of seven.

This set is composed of two 144-page paperback books, including over 500 comics from the strip’s debut in Nov. 1985 through March 1987. It is the first of seven sets total to be released between 2023 and 2026.

The first set of two books publishes 17 months of strips, so the entire series of The Calvin and Hobbes Portable Compendium by Bill Watterson will consist of seven box sets totaling 14 volumes.

The images presented here come from the Amazon page for the first set. The product details from there:

Which still doesn’t give us the dimensions of these “portable” comic books.

So here comes some pure conjecture.

They will obviously be landscape format. I’m guessing publisher Andrews McMeel took the early Calvin and Hobbes square paperbacks (8.5″ x 8.8″) and the later landscape paperbacks (12.1″ x 9.3″) and transmogrified them into an amalgamation.

The result being 9″ x 6″ books that will fit nicely on the shelf with other AMP books and comic book graphic novels when stood on its side in the box.

  1. This could be an attractive addition to the bookshelf but whether I need every Calvin & Hobbes cartoon again after purchasing the gigantic 3 book HC edition already is the Question… The Answer is probably yes 🙂

  2. After Calvin and Hobbies left the newspaper comic strips , I rearly read any others after . It was a total loss . Bought the book .

  4. I hope Bill made a gazillion dollars on his cartoons. I stopped reading cartons when he retired. His work is so thoughtful, it always takes me back to grade school.
