CSotD: When “yes” means “shut up”

Varvel
Gary Varvel's cartoon conveys more about Donald Trump and the GOP than progressive cartoonists can get into a panel: Simply the expression on the elephant's face tells where things are at this point for conservatives.

The dotted line says more: Where is he headed? What comes next? Is there any plan here at all?

As for the "political minefield," it's interesting that even conservatives — who, as a group, dismiss any objection to racist, sexist comments as "political correctness" — are beginning to realize that the more people you alienate, the less likely you are to win an election.

Though there are still far-right pundits explaining that they don't need the Hispanic vote to win, or, at least, that Romney's defeat was not linked to his poor showing there.

Yeah, the same ones screaming over the fact that Latinos are on the verge of outnumbering "us."

Though, y'know, it's not like Florida's Cuban-American bloc ever swung a presidential election.

Nate Silver dismisses the chance that Trump could possibly get the nomination, but, even if he's right, the elephant is trapped in there for now and Trump could seriously cripple the GOP brand, if he hasn't done so already.

So, two things happened recently:

One is that I watched an ESPN 30-for-30 documentary about the USFL on Netflix, and the other is that I read a piece on what Trump actually said about that Muslim registry.

EspnThe USFL documentary was on a football league that, in the early 80s, was establishing itself, but was thrown off the track by greedy over-reaching, mostly spearheaded by Donald Trump, who led a charge to expand the league well before it was ready to go head-to-head with the NFL.

The piece on what Trump actually said dovetailed with the brusque, arrogant young tyro in the documentary, because he didn't actually say he favored a Muslim registry.

Read in context, what he did say reminded me of a guy I worked for back in my television days, and who would appear to agree with you when what he was really saying was "Yeah, yeah, shut up and let's talk about what I want to talk about."

You could get yourself in a lot of trouble if you acted upon the theory that "yeah" meant anything other than "shut up."

Which I learned the hard way when he apparently "approved" my plan for organizing how we produced local commercials. I mistook "yeah, it's fine, go ahead" for approval, because … well, because I hadn't been working with him for very long yet.

Trump doesn't listen to anyone, which is why he makes proposals that are totally off the wall (so to speak) or circulates bogus information from neo-Nazi websites.

He's not a Nazi. He's an irresponsible, arrogant idiot.

Trumpwall
Matt Bors has suddenly become more active than in some time. This long analysis of Trump's proposal to build a wall is an extremely entertaining read, but, then, it's a bit of a case of going after a spider with a meat ax, because the proposal is so idiotic on the surface that explaining exactly why it won't work is futile.

"Futile" because anyone with a brain already knows how ridiculous it is without needing details, while Trump's devoted followers are such fact-resistant simpletons that you might as well explain it to the dog as to them.

Bor151123
But Bors really hits paydirt with this piece in which the "bland restatement" style is perfect, because, yeah, you don't have to even tell us what delusional jackass actually said those words.

Trump doesn't listen and he doesn't think and he doesn't bother to find out the most basic facts about the issues he addresses — remember that he still "isn't sure" if Obama was born in Hawaii or Kenya.

If his hair flapped as freely as his tongue, he'd have to give in and get a toupe.

The damn fool apparently doesn't know that the would-be refugees are mostly in Turkey, and are not still stuck back in Syria.

Or that they can't just choose to come to the United States.

Or that we have barely approved any of those who have qualified to request refugee status here.

Idiot Boy doesn't even glance at the math: "We have a president that wants to take hundreds of thousands — hundreds of thousands — of people and move them into our country."

I like that he repeats "hundreds of thousands" to emphasize it, when the actual number is 10,000.

As the saying goes, "Often in error, never in doubt."

Sack
I wish I lived in a country with the sang-froid of Britain in the face of the Blitz, as Steve Sack points out.

("Sang froid" is French for "cojones" which is Spanish for "if you got to ask, you ain't got it.")

I have nothing to add to this juxtaposition.

Vulture headThough you might be interested to know that, while they are sharp-eyed, turkey vultures do a lot of their searching through their sense of smell.

Get a load of those nostrils, which are so finely tuned that, out in rural desert country, utility companies watch the buzzards because they will land and gather on barren spots, attracted by the odorant of an underground gas leak.

Want to know more? The site where I snatched this pic has some fascinating information about a variety of scavengers, including — but far from limited to — this gem about today's star:

They’re perfect for this job: they have an extremely well-developed sense of smell that allows them to home in on food that's miles away; their bald heads reduce the amount of rotting matter that might stick to them; strong acids in their digestive tracts destroy harmful bacteria; and their urine is also very acidic – and here’s the best part – so they pee down their legs to let the acid destroy nasty bacteria clinging to them.

You're welcome.

Enjoy your Thanksgiving bird, whichever one you choose.

Now a message about refugees from the Trump Campaign:

  1. IMO, it’s very easy to see why Trump is such an irresponsible jackass and why he continues stop spout off about things he doesn’t know and why he listens to no one or bother to fact check before saying things.
He’s never had to worry- about ANYTHING.
Think about it. Most people, when they reach our ages or any age over forty has probably experienced some set backs, tragedies, or worse! (I know, I can speak from experience because it’s currently happening to me in my search for a job.) But not Trump/ He was born with a silver spoon, given a ton of money to start a business. Sure, he may have had some businesses file for bankruptcy, but at any time has he had to worry about losing his (only) home? Be concerned where his next meal is coming from? Trump is like a guy at the blackjack table who has all the money in the world and continues to say “hit me” even though he has 21 showing.
The last thing any country (or for that matter, any group of people in pursuit of a leader) needs is, someone who has no idea what the word empathy means, to lead them.

  2. I agree across the board, but, um … did you just spoiler your own cartoon??
