The Dolly Parton Comic Strip That Didn’t Happen

From the late 1970s to the early 1980s when Fran Matera had lost his job ghosting the art for the Rex Morgan, M.D. comic strip (1975-1978) and had not yet started drawing The Legend of Bruce Lee (1982-1983) comic strip Matera was “slumming” in in comic books and other odd jobs.
Matera was always submitting comic strip proposals to the syndicates whether he was working on one or not. During that fallow period around 1980-1981 the cartoonist teamed with writer Sharman DiVono to attempt a comic strip starring Dolly Parton.
Dolly never sold to a syndicate. The project very well may have been done on “spec,” with the pair working up a few weeks of samples and then present it to Parton for her approval. (The preceding is conjecture and is speculation itself.)
