CSotD: Thursday short takes, ridiculous and sublime

As all eyes — well, all South African eyes at any rate — turn to the livecasts of the Oscar Pistorius trial, Jeremy Nell suggests that it's perhaps not quite as riveting as everyone was hoping.

Don't try to tell that to Madam & Eve. Or, rather, you don't have to tell Eve at all, and it's pointless to try to tell Madam or Mother Anderson.

Meanwhile, the flurry over incompetent translation coming out of the trial quickly swamped Facebook as people rushed to leap onto the parallel ridiculous translation flashback from the Mandela memorial, here ably served up by Mark Wiggett, via Africartoons.
Parental guidance

Keith Knight overplays things in this K Chronicle. Oh, Keefe, oh dear, so unnecessary and unwise to have set the bar so high!
The Zamboni is all you need to create a loyal fan, and it shows up three times at every game without fail. Four if you stick around, five if you come really early.
And don't bother with the pros. College hockey is just as good, the tickets are cheaper and it's generally easier for little people to move around. Best part about hockey for little people is that right up close is the safest place to be — right there behind the glass.
(On second thought, I guess it's okay to go to pro games. You have to understand that, while I have a strong feeling that no city that can't create ice without mechanical help should even have an NHL franchise, I'm also still upset over the addition of expansion teams like the Flyers and the North Stars. Six was plenty. You dang kids get off of my ice!)
And speaking of parenting …

And, while we're on the topic of parenting, today's Buckets cracked me up. Nothin' to add. It just made me laff.
And speaking of making me laff …
I'm so fed up with commentators and cartoonists who couldn't find Ukraine on a map much less their asses with both hands that I've decided to limit today's passalongs to things that not only made a coherent point (rare enough) but made me laff (priceless).
Yep. Both, and both through a combination of sarcasm and really funny pitchers.
I like funny pitchers.
A different kind of laughter
This isn't about cartoons, but it needs to be pointed out.
Besides laughter over jokes, there is also such a thing as a burst of joyous, triumphant, delighted laughter, for instance, when courage not only emerges in a time of crisis, but then repeats itself a decade later.

Here's a kid's-eye-view explainer I wrote about the Ukrainian elections of 2004. (Yes, with a correction. Homer nodded.)
And here's the 2014 update.
The only bad part of all this is how very rarely it happens and how many others are content to be part of the machine.
But, indeed, there is joy over the sheep that was lost, and now is found.
The rest of the sheep, alas, are part of a different metaphor.
