Avengers take in $200.3 MILLION in opening weekend

From Yahoo Movies:

Avengers is now positioned to reach $1 billion in global grosses in a much-needed win for Disney, which posted a $200 million loss after John Carter cratered at the box office earlier this year. It’s also a validation of Marvel’s strategy to build a franchise by turning out single titles — Iron Man, Thor and Captain America — and then bring the characters together. Avengers also could reboot The Hulk film franchise.

Among other records, Avengers is the first film in history to cross $200 million in only three days of play at the domestic box office. It also scored the biggest Saturday gross of all time in earning $69.7 million.

I had other things planned for the weekend, so I didn’t even attempt to see it, but I feel like I’m the only one that didn’t. If you did see it, what did you think?

  1. Lots of flash and action, but very little story. Also thought the 3D effects were wasted…lots of stuff exploding but nothing jumped off the screen in 3D. I didn’t dislike the movie, but not sure I’d recommend it. Maybe I would have enjoyed it more if the idiots behind me had kept their kid quiet…he repeated almost every line in the movie as if he just thought of it himself.

  2. Took my 12 year old and we LOVED it! The Hulk was oddly the scene stealer with many belly-laughing bits. This was more light hearted instead of the dark and morose super hero films and the chemistry really worked. You shoulda Hulked-out on the idiots behind you, Randy!

  3. I must have seen another Avenger movie…. The one I saw was freaking great… but I had no distractions. Agree that the story was weak, but they did have a Hulk so that makes up for the lack of story.

I dare say that if you put the Hulk in Jon Carter, it would have made money.

I also bet if the Hulk was in Cars 2, it would have been the best movie of 2011.

Seriously, I enjoyed the Avengers for what it was… a fun action packed thrill ride. I honestly did not expect a good movie going in… just a fun one. That is what I got too.

  4. Too bad Jack Kirby’s family won’t see anything from this. I know it doesn’t amount to much, but I’m boycotting the movie for that reason alone. I’ve loved these characters since I was a boy (I’m 53 now), but Disney/Marvel’s treatment of Kirby and his legacy are inexcusable. It may be legal, but it isn’t moral.

  5. Amazing movie! All the story was in the solo movies, this was about action and butt kicking and there was plenty of both!! So many funny lines too!!

And Hulk absolutely was the scene stealer!!
