Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Running across the page like some tiny elf

03

Heh. I just noticed the other day that my phone, which I've had for several months, still had its plastic. I wish I had someone in my life who would be maddened by my indifference, but I don't, so I went ahead and peeled it off.

That much sooner it will be all scratched up. I hope someone out there is happy.

I called the bank the other day for a new card, because the one I had was starting to fail when it was swiped. I would note that some of the younger clerks would swipe it twice without results, then grab a Baggie, put the card in it, swipe, and get a successful read.

Just sayin'. Plastic is young, hip and enhances performance.

Nemi can be a frustrating strip because the only place I've found it online in English is in Metro, a publication from the UK, where it is often left un-updated and, when they do bother, it's small and, if there's a lot of dialogue, tough to read.

Worth it, though. "Frustrating but worth it" is, in fact, a pretty good description of Nemi.

To be fair, the kink in the hose may involve the process of translating it from Norwegian to English rather than incompetence in updating the page. The end result, however, is the same: I visit every day, and it will go without updates for a time, then suddenly three strips will appear and then it will be updated for awhile and then it goes back on hiatus.

Frustrating, though probably not as frustrating as a real life Nemi would be.

She's a lot more appealing in two dimensions and at a distance, which, of course, is why I like the strip so much. Her dysfunctional nature is at the center of the strip and Lise Myhre does a very nice job of depicting a bewitching but toxic character, one who seems a burden on her friends and a hazard to single men, until she turns around and redeems herself by doing something sweet.

And then goes back to being completely obnoxious. Did I mention that Nemi's last name is "Montoya"?

I can't translate that Norwegian at the end, but I can make out the term "surround sound."

However, her own "surround sound" is her deal. It goes without saying that nobody else better provide any distractions when she's trying to listen.

In poking around, I've found that (A) the Metro strips and the current Norwegian strips don't match up very well and (B) you often don't need major linquistic skills to get a kick out of this girl, who certainly does offer a hearty dose of infinite variety.

If you CAN read Norwegian, or Danish or Swedish (and I have reason to suspect at least ONE of you can), you might enjoy this site, which features, as its name suggests, Scandinavian Comics. I found some sites with English versions of the strip, but they seemed even less up to date than Metro and no more related to what's running in real-time in Norwegian.

I also found one in Russian, and then there was this Italian animation. My recommendation? Might as well just find a comfortable spot and let her do her thing.

  1. Not so sweet Martha Lorraine?

  2. I was going to add a Country Joe video of that at the end, but decided the girl in the song is too much of a trend-follower and airhead. Nemi’s not a total bummer, just a better friend than lover.
