CSotD: Progress has its costs

Jerm-post-1994-election-cartoon

In the wake of nationwide municipal elections, South Africa's Jeremy "Jerm" Nell provides a reminder that not everyone lives in a place where a smooth-running election is traditional.

Which means life is getting harder for the nation's political cartoonists. President Jacob Zuma's threatened lawsuit against cartoonist Zapiro for defamation seems to have drifted off into the ether and yesterday's elections didn't result in riots, accusations or anything easy to mock.

Don't feel too bad for them, however. The elections themselves may have skirted the corruption and screw-ups of the past, but it's not like the campaign didn't deliver a little fodder for humor. With basic services and infrastructure still a lively issue in that country, much of the publicity focused on competing accusations of building open-air toilets in poor neighborhoods, a crisis which did not escape the notice of cartoonists, including, it goes without saying, Madam & Eve.

Enjoy it while you can, gang. Progress can be a real drag.
