Nothing to add to this 1895 Punch classic, except that it is the work of George du Maurier and that it added a phrase to the lexicon that has not lost its value over the years. (If the caption is not legible, click on the picture for a larger version)

  1. In our family this is a “family joke.” It can be used in a lot of different situations. We just say “the Curate’s egg” and everyone chuckles or smiles…or not!

  2. I’d never heard that phrase until recently. We always used the punchline — “parts of it are excellent.”
    All of the cartoon is excellent.
