CSotD: The Art of the Dumb

There is a talent for writing really stupid gags that shouldn't be underestimated. Joe Martin has a talent for really lame, obvious, stupid jokes that get under your defenses and provoke a giggle. The guy throws a lot of mud at the wall, with three daily panels and some animations all going at once, but when something sticks, it's well worth having been there. For my money, Willy 'N Ethel is the most consistent of his projects, but this is definitely a case where your mileage may vary. (That link will hook you up to his entire opera. Yes, he puts all his ouevres in one basket.)
To understand Martin's inspired foolishness, you need to know about a formative event in his life, which he explained in the foreward to "Warning: Willy 'N Ethel," his 1984 collection of strips:
"When I was a young man, I inherited a million dollars. I ripped it to shreds and burned it. I then went to the top of a mountain where, for the next 10 years, I pondered the mistakes of mankind. One in particular."
