CSotD: Home is the cartoonist

AfghanBlog41color

Ted Rall, Matt Bors and Steven Cloud are home from Afghanistan and Rall continues his journal of the trip here. This is an important document, since they were not on the Guided Tour.

I don't have any reason to think that the military is purposely misleading journalists who visit under more formal arrangements, but, when you travel with someone who has a particular purpose for being in a place, you see the countryside through their eyes. That's not a bad thing, necessarily, but we've seen that point of view for a couple of years now and it's become familiar to the point of being part of the wallpaper.

This trio took another approach and simply wandered through Afghanistan talking to people and trying to get from Point A to Point B without getting themselves in too much trouble. They had to modify some of their plans, since they had only the vaguest of plans to begin with, but they came back with a different set of experiences than we've seen before.

So far, Ted Rall has done the most to tell the story, though you should also check the other links above. Cloud has some good photographs and Bors has begun some cartoons about the trip.

Don't expect Maus, but expect to learn some things you didn't know, and to gain some insights you weren't going to get from the embeds. As I said earlier, we don't often meet the civilians in these situations and you can't really understand a war without doing that.
