CSotD: A rare case of actual interaction

Culdesac

I could probably feature "Cul de Sac" three times a week, but today's is particularly special: Alice brings up a topic, Petey responds to it and Alice actually responds to what he said instead of simply continuing her eternal, external monologue. It is a rarity to be remarked upon.

(With some Googling, I could probably find out if JS Bach actually said that, and the precise number of his children, but why spoil the moment. The wig/bathmat thing, of course, is something we all knew.)

  1. According to wiki, he had twenty children (by two wives), ten of whom survived into adulthood.
I couldn’t find anything close about the quote. I wonder if Petey/Richard is adapting adapting a similar quote about something completely different. In any case, the piano wasn’t invented until late in Bach’s life, and if he said something like that, it might have been about the harpsichord or clavichord.
I agree that you could almost make this a “Cul-de-Sac Appreciation Blog.”

  2. Hm – first link returned by Google for “bach quotes” (no quotes) is http://thinkexist.com/quotes/johann_sebastian_bach/ ; second quote:
“It’s easy to play any musical instrument: all you have to do is touch the right key at the right time and the instrument will play itself.”
Of course for all we know *their* source for this is [the thoroughly excellent, but not necessarily authoritative] Cul-de-sac.
