Most of The Rest of The Society of Illustrators Awards

The recent news of the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists awards and their commingling with the Society of Illustrators (SoI) has prompted The Daily Cartoonist to list most of the rest of that Society’s 2026 awards, adding to the group’s 2026 Hall of Fame honors that were reported earlier this year.
The 2026 Hamilton King Award
The Hamilton King Award “is presented annually for the best work in the Annual Exhibition executed by a member of the Society.” This year The Balbusso Twins, Anna and Elena, were named winners of the award.
The Original Art Lifetime Achievement Awards
The Lifetime Achievement Award recipients are “judged to have a body of work that documents an innovative and pioneering contribution to the field of children’s book illustration.”
Two awards are given annually: one posthumously and one to a living illustrator.
This year the honorees were David Wiesner and James Marshall
The Richard Gangel Award
The Richard Gangel Art Director Award honors art directors currently working in the field who have supported and advanced the art of illustration. Rodrigo Honeywell won the award for 2026.
The Distinguished Educator
The Distinguished Educator has attained the highest standards of academic achievement and has demonstrated interest in and capability of furthering the Society’s educational programs.
The 2026 honoree is Matt Curtius.
The SI IMPACT Award
The SI Impact Award recognizes individuals who have contributed to, affected, and influenced the Society of Illustrators. For 2026 Rob Byrnes is recognized.
The Dilys Evans Founder’s Award
The Dilys Evans Founder’s Award recognizes promising new talent in children’s book illustration.
Neena Phan is the 2026 winner of the Dilys Evans Founder’s Award for her book entitled The Lonely Fox, (Clarion Books, HarperCollins Publishers).
Stephen Dohanas Award
The Stevan Dohanos award is considered the Best in Show of the annual Members Open.
The Society of Illustrators 2026 Members Open exhibit “RIBBIT: The Art of the Amphibian & Reptile“ opens tomorrow September 23. The winner will be named later this year.
