Reuben Award-Winning Animator Glen Keane Rescued Off Mountain

Animator Glen Keane, the son of cartoonist Bil Keane and brother to cartoonist Jeff Keane (and the Billy in Family Circus), needed help getting down from an Arizona mountaintop Wednesday.

Oscar-winning animator Glen Keane said he was hiking in Paradise Valley with family and the described the moment he needed help Wednesday morning. He was with his daughter and grandchildren on Mummy Mountain when he became tired, weak and unsteady. Keane says his grandchildren handled the trail easily, but he reached a narrow ridge and realized, “I really needed help.” Phoenix firefighters called in a helicopter because of the steep terrain and dangerous drop-offs around him. After being flown to safety, Keane reflected on growing up hiking Mummy Mountain and warned that conditions can change, especially in the Arizona heat.

Celebrated animator and director Glen Keane is alive and well after a helicopter rescue near Phoenix, Arizona on Wednesday. The Oscar-winning creator and Disney Legend was airlifted to safety after he became stranded near the summit of Mummy Mountain in 109F-degree heat. The 72-year old, who grew up in the area but now lives in France, was on a hike with his grandchildren.
Yeah, Glen is an Oscar-winning animator, but for our concerns he is an NCS Reuben Award-winning animator.
