Becky Burke: ICE Detention Graphic Novel Coming

Prospect Magazine has a profile on R.E. Burke, the young British cartoonist who was picked up by United States Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while on an extended visit to the U.S. and Canada. She spent 19 days in detention before she was released to return to the U.K.

She’s close to finishing a 255 page graphic novel of her experience. Visiting America: 19 Days in an I.C.E Facility will be released in 2027 by Fantagraphics. From the Prospect article:

Creating the 255-page graphic novel—she’s putting the final touches to it now—has been cathartic but also difficult for Burke, as she relives her own struggles while detained. “There are probably scenes in the book I haven’t spoken about to anyone, because I’m worried about upsetting people, especially my parents. But I think it’s important for people to know what goes on in these places, especially right now.

“If I could get some Trump supporters to read this, I’d be happy. Because I just reckon people don’t think this far ahead when they’re making decisions politically. They don’t think about all the consequences of what they’re voting for.”

  1. We need more people in all forms of media sharing their terrible experiences at the hands of our present US govt., at the very least as a historical record not so easily erased by them.

As an aside, Rebecca has a wonderful sense of color… 🙂
