The Glyph Awards
The East Coast Black Age of Comics Convention (ECBACC) has announced the winners of their Glyph Awards, honoring “outstanding achievements in comics made by, for, and about people of color.”
George Gant, the Beware of Toddler cartoonist, was nominated in six of the nine categories. His “Dady” won for the Best Male Character. For the Best Webcomic or Comic Strip category the award went to Gerald Vreden (writer) and Hakim Rafai (artist) for Rise of The Mafu.

Rise of the Mafu was the big winner, nominated in all nine categories it took the award in four of them, along with Best Webcomic the comic and it’s creators won for Best Writer, Best Artist, and Best Cover.
Time Travelling Caveman
And it’s not Alley Oop.
A spell goes wrong and a wizard from The Middle Ages switches places with a caveman from the Palaeolithic Era. And the Curls guest starring continues into Tuesday. (I’m hoping for a week of it and The Wiz showing up in B.C.)
Covering Dick Tracy
Occasional Dick Tracy comic strip artist Howie Noel was offered the opportunity to illustrate Clover Press’ edition of Dick Tracy 1963. Martin at Geek Vibes Nation interviewed Howie about how he approached the project.
HOWIE: I wanted the piece to work with the slipcover first. I knew I needed a striking image for that and I wanted it to be a classic Dick Tracy portrait. Also, as it’s an official cover and a dream come true, I wanted to draw as many characters as I could – especially the Rogues. I really wanted a nighttime mood to my cover and always love the chance to have some light highlights to characters’ teeth and eyes to help express the vibe. Also, in this era, Gould’s art is very bold and striking and I had that inspiration as well.
I Don’t Believe It
After 11 weeks of two cartoonists alternating on the Ripley’s Believe It or Not panel they needed to stave off the dreaded deadline doom by running Kieran Castaño reruns from 2023?
More with Wisconsin’s Cartoon Laureate
Paul Noth, the newly installed Wisconsin Cartoon Laureate, joined Kate Archer Kent at Wisconsin Public Radio’s Wisconsin Today to discuss cartooning and his efforts in that endeavor.
PN: I grew up with such a knowledge of [cartooning] and its history, and I knew it was the hardest place to ever possibly get into. So I never even tried until I met a New Yorker cartoonist. I was living in New York, and I brought some of my other writing to a monthly show called The Rejection Show because I hadn’t been able to sell any of my writing at all. This was a live show where people would bring in their best rejected material, and that’s where I met a cartoonist named Matt Diffee, who’s a great New Yorker cartoonist and children’s author. And I showed him some of my work, and he really encouraged me to submit.
Once an Editorial Cartoonist Always an Editorial Cartoonist
I don’t know when Bill Schorr gave up editorial cartooning, but he just can’t help tweaking politicians’ noses once in a while in his The Grizzwells comic strip.
