Clément Oubrerie–RIP
Skip to commentsFrench cartoonist Clément Oubrerie has passed away at the age of 59.

Clément, born in Paris, studied art at Penninghen School of Art Direction and Interior Architecture in Paris before moving to the United States where he began his career as a children’s illustrator. His stay in the U.S. ended with time in a New Mexico jail because he did not have residency papers. He returned to France to start an animation studio and worked in advertising.
His first graphic novels came in 2005 with the first book in the Aya de Yopougon, series. His then-wife Marguerite Abouet was the author. The book went on to win Award for Best First Album in the Angoulême Comic Festival in 2006. The couple created seven more books in the series, the last one published in 2023.

In his career he created over 40 children’s books, co-founded the 3-D animation studio Station OMD, and was a A drummer in a funk band.
John Freeman has a write-up over on Down the Tubes that covers his professional work. The Comics Journal has published a lengthy memoriam by Cynthia Rose the delves deeper into his work and his life. Both recommended reads.
