There will be a lot of Steve Jobs obituary cartoons over the next week, but this designer has nailed it. Every once in a long while, a "weeper" cartoon works. This one works.

What I find interesting — and a bit depressing — is that I'm seeing cartoons this morning that are the same as cartoons that popped up on Facebook almost as soon as the news was announced that Jobs had died. And most of them, as with this one, were being done by random talented folks rather than professional cartoonists.

I don't mean to suggest that cartoonists were monitoring Facebook and ripping off ideas, but rather that there aren't that many good obituary cartoons out there. How many ways can you implant a silhouette of Steve Jobs into the cut-out of the Apple apple? How many variations are there of him having an app for St. Peter?

The death of a public figure is like a snow day for cartoonists.

I’m partial to Scott Stantis’ take on it. It does use the “app” meme, but it also points out exactly how influential he was in science and technology.

  2. I hadn’t seen that, but it’s not a huge surprise: Stantis does consistently thoughtful work.
I still like getting in and getting out on these things, rather than overthinking them. It gets cloying when you try to do too much. But Stantis did well, again.

  3. That one of the most innovative minds to ever live is remembered by one of the least innovative art forms is the definition of irony.
It’s like that Aunt who thinks she can sing who always wants to “honor” Dear Dead Uncle Whoever by singing at his funeral. Thanks but no thanks.
