Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: Talking amongst themselves

I haven't run more than one strip as a "Comic Strip of the Day" before and I don't intend to make a habit of it, the name of the blog seeming to obviously rule against it.

But here are two strips that ran today and might as well have been linked from the start. It's not as simple as being on the same topic — there are any number of times two different strips will have a joke about toasters or lobsters or something on the same day. Curious, but not significant.

However, in this case, there is a slightly different take on the same satirical point between Garry Trudeau's Doonesbury and Tim Eagan's Deep Cover that makes it worth running them both, and in that order.

Note the change in where the frustration is centered, because, while both are focused on a failure to connect with the electorate, and both have identified the same reason for the disconnect, Trudeau is more pragmatic and therefore harder on the president, while Eagan seems to be wishing that people were more discerning than they are.

Not only is the juxtaposition interesting, but I think it's also interesting that they've come up with commentaries that are more nuanced and thought-provoking than what is seen on the editorial page these days.  Eight panels in total, and not a drawing of an elephant or a donkey to be seen.
