Comic Strip of the Day

CSotD: For this comic relief, much thanks

I really don't intentionally follow each major rant here by running a silly cartoon the next day, though perhaps my mind instinctively seeks one out as part of its recovery-from-deep-thoughts process. Still, Rhymes With Orange has been shown to be an effective source of silliness that can be of significant value when used as directed in a conscientiously applied program of self-directed mental hygiene and regular amateur care.

When I interviewed Bunny Hoest, she spoke of how, despite the Lockhorns being a one-panel cartoon, people ascribe action and entire plot lines to it. Today's RWO works much the same way — the humor is not in the picture itself, but in the mental image of his continued futility. Hilary Price provides the kernal of silliness, and that's enough to start you laffing over the knowledge that Ted is going to be out there a very long time, trying to make this work.

And for those in the Northampton, Mass., area, Ms. Price (who is both estimable and redoubtable, and I was unable to choose one) will be holding her annual open studio the weekend of November 13 and 14. Check her website between now and then for details, but the basics (based on past years) are 10 to 5, 221 Pine St. Suite 414, Florence, Mass., and worth the trip.

Last year was a hoot.

  1. Hilary’s one of the most thoughtful cartoonists I’ve ever met, in all meanings of the word. What makes this one especially funny to me is the emphasis given to “up.”
