Tom Toles sorts out the conservative response to the Times Square Terrorist. (For those who have not followed the details, he's not projecting any potential views. He's reporting actual positions.) Toles has a style that is so playful that, even when he's delivering zingers, it feels pleasant. Or, to riff on an old definition of "diplomacy," he can tell you to go to hell in such a way that you look forward to the trip.
I've never met the fellow, but I know that, when he left the Buffalo News, the educational services people were bereft because he not only designed them a Christmas card each year but actively encouraged them to bring field trips by his desk, where he would proceed to draw for the kids. And everything I've heard about him since indicates that he's a really nice guy.
On the other hand, I'm glad we tend to agree, because, for all those broad lines and for all the lack of right angles in his cartoons, the man has one very sharp pen.
