Zapiro Collected for the 30th Time

Zapiro, Daily Maverick

Edward Tsumele at City Life reviews the new book, and the career, of South African cartoonist Zapiro.

The cartoonist has made it easy for people to see that corruption is a disturbing practice that robs the poor. This has resulted in a situation whereby the crooked have scorned him for his genius, while the public have seen him as a hero who graphically shows the wrong doing by those who wiled people and lack accountability. Therefore the corrupt have often accused him of all sorts of things, even racism at different times in the past 30 years, while the public has hailed him as their hero whose work has contributed in holding those with state power accountable, and therefore contributing to the deepening of the democracy project.

What Else Could Go Wrong contains cartoons previously been published in Daily Maverick during 2025.

…For example the book that sold the most was the one he released in 2007, which sold over 21 copies. That is quite huge by South African standards, especially for a book on cartoons. Perhaps that should not surprise anyone, for in reality, Zapiro has played an important role in mainstreaming the art of political cartoons, taking it from the periphery of public imagination in to the mainstream.

Tim Campbell Has a New Substack

Tim Campbell

Tim Campbell, self described as “nationally syndicated and classically trained (self taught) Editorial Cartoonist,” last month started the Substack newsletter and background platform tc2oons.

I started this Substack page just over 1 month ago and thanks to all of you I’m currently the #3 Rising Creator in Comics. In just 32 days I’ve gotten over 200 subscribers and probably double that number of followers. What I would like to do is increase my paid subscriber numbers. There is no paywall for what I post, everything is free. However, what I will do for all of my paid subscribers is send you a signed original as well as the color print of one of my cartoons. I’ve been doing this for 19 years so I have a few laying around.

Mark Knight on Energy Costs

Mark Knight

A lot of people in the United States seem to think our problems are unique to us. They aren’t. Australian cartoonist Mark Knight informs youngsters about the energy problem and how his cartoon came about.

We’re addicted to electricity. Everything runs on it. Industry needs loads of energy to make things and create jobs. It is predicted AI will use unimaginable amounts of energy to keep its massive data centres and their processing of billions of intensive computations*. So it will be tricky as we negotiate the energy transition from coal power generation to renewables like wind and solar.

So I thought I would draw a cartoon on how the Energy and Climate Change Minister Chris Bowen might react to the news about energy costs… However, Minister Bowen is a delight to draw. He has an interesting face and when I Googled his image in preparation for the cartoon I saw something. Maybe it was because I was thinking about electricity and stuff but when I looked at his face, I saw a power point! Weird, huh? I could not unsee it…

Since we are in Australia…

  1. The original image was from a series of books called the “Life Science/Nature Library’s” volume on evolution, dating from the 1960s.

The series was brilliant, and even though parts are really dated (“The Planets” volume, which dates to before the Mariner probes, and promotes the idea that all the planets besides Mercury may be home to life), it’s still worth reading.
