CSotD: Whimpers and bangs
This is the way the blog begins, not with a bang but a whimper.I was diagnosed with diabetes a year or so ago, though I’ve now lost enough weight that, if I’d been here then, I wouldn’t have been diagnosed, but it’s like being pregnant: There’s no going back and I have to exercise the […]

Charlie Brown/Smiths mashup blog approved by Morrissey
A Tumblr blog that removes dialog from Peanuts and replaces them with lyrics from The Smiths has cleared one legal challenge. According to Under The Radar, Universal Music sent a cease and desist letter to Tumblr alleging copyright infringement. The music company stopped the desist request after The Smiths frontman Morrissey said he was a […]
CSotD: Random indignities
Here’s today’s Candorville, in honor of the fact that it’s been five years since I took on a job that lasted about six months. Before I accepted the job, I asked my prospective boss how the then-new recession was hitting the paper and he assured me that things were just fine, that a community with […]
CSotD: Garfield: The Future of Comics
It’s fashionable to hate Garfield, with his repetitive dread of Mondays and abuse of Odie and embrace of lasagna and so forth and so on. Or, at least, that’s what I assume still goes on there. To tell the truth, for all the strips I read every day, Garfield isn’t one of them. However, that said […]
CSotD: Whiskers on rainbows and kettles of kittens
I’m still tied up with young journalist workshops. Here are some cartoons I would have blogged about if I’d had a blog about cartoons back when they ran, with dates if I marked them, without if I didn’t. I just kept’em ’cause I liked ’em. I didn’t know I’d ever actually use them for anything. […]
Judge to Charlie Brown actor: “Don’t be a blockhead”
I think this sums up nicely what I hope will be the last in the saga of Peter Robbins, the actor who was the original voice behind the Peanuts character Charlie Brown. From ABC News:A judge warned Peter Robbins that he could be sent to prison for nearly four years if he violates the terms of […]
CSotD: “New” as in “newspaper” as in “theoretically”
Lio has been skewering the selection of strips in newspapers this week, and it’s been funny, pointed stuff. Mark Tatulli is in a good position to rant on the topic, not just because he’s funny about it, but because, between Lio and Heart of the City, he’s got a pair of successful strips. So it’s not […]
Schulz put *sigh* in American print vernacular
John Gruber, of Mac blog Daringfireball fame, noted the increasing number of times he sees people use (*cough*) as a visual indicator of a verbal response to something the author just stated. After tweeting his curiosity on the matter, David Friedman ran it through Google Books looking to see when it started *cough* came into […]
Secret love letters from Charles Schulz heading to auction
If you’ve read the “Schulz and Peanuts: A Biography”, it’s not a surprise to learn that Charles Schulz, creator of the beloved Peanuts comic strip had an extramarital affair while married to his first wife. The are several media stories now that report 44 love letters and original drawings by Sparky to his mistress Tracey […]
CSotD: Drawing from personal experience
An encouraging strip from xkcd. The strip isn’t explicitly autobiographical, but it isn’t not-autobiographical, either, which is a facet of modern cartooning that matters. Some artists are explicitly autobiographical, like Keith Knight, others are implicitly autobiographical, like Adam Huber, and some put the comic on its own footing but are very open about the creative process, […]

Monday, Charles Schulz would have turned 90 years old. Yahoo posted 10 Interesting Facts About the Peanuts Creator (but you probably did if you read the Schulz and Peanuts bio. But one of the tidbits they offered that you might not have seen are 42 tribute strips that ran back in 2000 on the day […]
