There are a few Benghazi cartoons making fun of the hyperinflation being brought to this non-event, but I think John Cole got it best. I mean, are we really not supposed to be able to see past the scary mask? Maybe if it were bigger. Maybe if it even began to somewhat fit.And yet there it […]
In the current (th)Ink, Keith Knight lobs a stinkbomb at a deserving target. I keep seeing stories tagged to HuffPo in my Facebook feed, but, honestly, it’s like one of those tired old TV shows that they keep renewing and, when you see it listed on your guide, your response has long since gone from […]
Matt Bors with a delightfully grim commentary on global trade and its most prominent cheerleader.I was a business reporter at a paper on the US/Canada border when the Free Trade Agreement went through in 1988, and it was a very big deal. We’d already established enough cross-border shopping to justify building a huge mall that […]
First, equal time for Those Other Pets, courtesy of Dan Piraro.Nothing much to add to this except “hahahahahahaha,” which is almost always good commentary, if not terribly enlightening. But I’ve had plenty to say recently about dogs and the credulity of their owners, so there’s no reason not to feature kitty cats, too.I’m a dog […]
I’ve spoken before of how much I loved the Sunday Mark Trail strip as a kid, and how much I wish more papers would carry it now, if only to keep kids somewhat rooted in the world outside. That rant is worth going back to, but today’s strip is a good example of (A) lore, (B) […]
I always hope that people are following at least some of the links here, sometimes because I link to something cool or funny in the way of additional commentary, but first and foremost because I link to the various featured artists and (A) I hope to turn people on to new stuff and (B) it’s […]
The factory disaster in Bangladesh is showing up in political cartoons. I particularly like Matt Davies’ piece, tying it into the brutal sweatshops of our own history. But I sure don’t have much of a prescription, beyond the obvious, unlikely and unhelpful.Yes, don’t buy clothes from sweatshops. So … where then? Because affordable clothes come from […]
Hate to use the same cartoonist too many times too close together, but the “red line” cartoons on Syria are starting to weird me out, and this Danziger cartoon hit the mark like no other. When did so many ink-slingers from both sides of the aisle become so easy-going about the lives of other people’s kids?Mike […]
Not sure where this arc on Zack Hill is headed. Either her fears will be shown to be silly or dog parks will be unmasked as hell-holes. I’m hoping for the former, but Deering and Newcombe don’t always mirror my thoughts.Cat owners take a lot of grief for eccentricity — much of it deserved — […]
The impact of sequestration cutbacks on airport operations triggered a response in Congress and that, in turn, triggered a response from cartoonists. Some — particularly in the days between the emergence of the issue and the legislative fix — were content simply to point out the problem, which I suppose was okay, since moving things forward […]
I’m going to assume that Wiley only stumbled into the news cycle today by happenstance, since “hotcakes” and “cupcakes” aren’t the same thing, and that it’s only barely possible to riff on an April 17 news story 11 days later, given deadlines. In any case, I don’t know about investing in hotcakes, but, if you invested […]
In today’s Knight Life, Keith Knight seems poised to leap into an unnecessary future. There are any number of reasons to resist the siren song of the new, and probably as many to embrace it. But the “dead trees” mantra needs to stop being a mantra and become, instead, a discussion.Beginning with a different phrase that […]
Does this happen to anybody anymore?Adam@Home had a computer crash and lost two months work. The arc begins here and is pretty funny to watch, if you’re into schadenfreude. And who isn’t?I’ve been pondering the arc, however, because I wonder how often this happens these days? Not that Basset and Harrell aren’t technically accurate: They […]
Nick Anderson comments on the NIMBY aspects of free-market capitalism in general and explosions in fertilizer plants specifically. One comment I read — and, yes, I know, the only people more foolish than the people who post those comments are the people who read them* — said that, well, they built this plant years ago and […]
Okay, yet another rant on the topic of cloth-eared editors and the state of cartooning. Start here: On Sunday, Daryl Cagle posted this cartoon to his Facebook page: He was immediately hit by a flurry of negative comments (mine among them), more or less along the line of yesterday’s CSOTD posting: That the Constitution not only […]
