Waiting for Hogan’s Alley magazine’s fantastic photo feature of the 2018 Reuben Weekend which, if past practice is any indication of future results, will present hundreds of pictures of hundreds of cartoonists; until then here’s a few others from the gala. Lynn Johnston has posted about receiving the NCS Medal of Honor. Can Lynn see the […]
From Today’s New York Times: This crumbling, beer-splotched wall in the back of a sports bar on East 44th Street is one of New York’s more neglected cultural treasures. Created in the 1970s, it is a veritable Sistine Chapel of American comic-strip art: the 30-some drawings across its face were left by a who’s who of cartooning […]
Mort Walker died yesterday. He was 94 and so was allowed to, but he certainly made the best of the generous slice of time he was given. While he created several strips, including “Hi and Lois,” “Boner’s Ark” and “Sam and Silo,” he will be best remembered for “Beetle Bailey,” which debuted the day after Mort’s 27th […]
(Frazz)(Warped)I often kind of pray each morning for some funny stuff that’s more compelling than the political stuff. There are times it’s like pulling for a horse who was way in the back of the pack on the backstretch, but I’m old enough to remember Silky Sullivan, so wotthehell.Perhaps I should have said “wotthe#@*&” because […]
I am not particularly obsessed with age at the moment, despite having just hit the magical Sgt. This week’s featured cartoonist is the legendary Mort Walker. Mort’s career began as a magazine editor for Dell Publishing, but his big break came with the creation of “Beetle Bailey” (1950) and “Hi and Lois” (1954). He received the Reuben Award in 1953 for “Beetle Bailey”, the National Cartoonist Society Humor Strip Award in 1966 […]
