CSotD: Shut up and drive

Derf Backderf on the recent report from the National Transportation Safety Board about cell phone use in cars. The third panel alone makes the whole comic a winner. This is a rich topic for cartoonists, but most will take on the more logical aspects. There are already a raft of editorials online making the argument for […]

CSotD: Meanwhile, back at the Con …

Pirate Cove has been taking a breather from its usual four-panel color absurdist shoot-em-ups to comment on comic conventions, at greater length than usual (this is only half of today’s episode, f’rinstance). It’s an interesting balance of insider and insight, and, if you’ve never been to a con, you’ll learn a few things about them here […]

CSotD: Please join in this discussion

I always like it when you leave comments, though the every-day pace of this blog often makes it hard to get into extended discussions here. We’ve had a few.But here’s one I’d like your thoughts on, and not necessarily in the comments section here. Over at Daily Ink, editor Brendan Burford has an entry about […]

CSotD: Happy Holidays, dammit

Terri Libenson’s “Pajama Diaries” is about a mother who works at home, and one aspect of her life is that she is Jewish. That aspect isn’t what the strip is about, but it’s a key component of the family, as religion tends to be in real families that practice a religion. And I think that, for […]

CSotD: Keeping the ex- in Xmas

There are half a dozen strips in the “Pick me! Pick me!” folder today, and whatever distractions may be driving your actions, and despite the fact that Saturday is traditionally the place cartoonists dump their least-of-the-week nominees, you should go read the funny pages. I didn’t spot any fruit cake gags and there were quite […]

Philly Mayor discusses his local cartoon

A couple of days ago I mentioned that Philadelphia Daily News editorial cartoonist Signe Wilkinson was taking a vacation and invited several local politicians to take the opporunity to draw cartoons in her spot in the newspaper. One of which was the city’s mayor, Michael Nutter, who has received a bit of attention for his […]

Bill Griffith featured in The Atlantic

The Atlantic profiles Zippy the Pinhead ceator Bill Griffith:How did Zippy come to be? In late 1970, Griffith was asked to contribute a story to “Real Pulp Comics #1,” edited by cartoonist Roger Brand. His only editorial guideline was to come up with a “Young Lust” type tale, possibly involving a menage a trois, with […]

CSotD: It can’t happen here, but it is

I usually find rants about Big Government Conspiracies tiresome, paranoid and self-important. Last night, I was watching an excellent documentary about OWS on Current TV, and someone being interviewed linked the movement to the Arab Spring, declaring that she and her fellow protesters were putting their lives on the line.No. You’re not. Comparing OWS with […]

CSotD: Most times, something is a cool hand

Today’s Deep Cover speaks for many, I’m afraid.I’m certainly not in favor of burning down the barn to get rid of the mice, but I can’t say the same for the people who rallied for Obama in 2008, thinking that he was going to accomplish miracles. At the time, I compared him to RFK, who had […]
