by Mike Peterson 3 comments June 2, 2020

RJ Matson offers a great take on “Blind Justice.”Blind Justice is an ideal that we’ve never achieved. The idea of a system in which everyone who comes before it gets equal treatment, in which Justice does not see who is on either side, is something to strive for even if we know in our hearts […]

Cathy Commiserations by Cathy Guisewite

by D. D. Degg 0 comments June 1, 2020

GoComics has added a new comic by a long-time friend. We’re all in this together…but it helps to see someone else with her face planted in the bowl of mashed potatoes. In the same way that Cathy was a relatable friend during the comic strip years, she’s returned to bring some happy relief now, offering […]

CSotD: Disconnecting from the Moment

by Mike Peterson 6 comments June 1, 2020

Loretta Lockhorn speaks wisdom, and, certainly, on a Monday morning, we can step back from current events for a bit.As long as we check back once in a while to see what’s going on.Every 10 minutes should be enough. When I used to visit high schools to talk about political cartoons, I’d show Nast’s obituary cartoon […]

CSotD: Lies, errors and other forms of sabotage

by Mike Peterson 11 comments May 31, 2020

Juxtaposition of the Day(Bob Gorrell)(Tom Toro, June 2012)And let me add that those who pretend to study history talk about the riots of 1968 in terms of the tumultuous demonstrations at the Democratic National Convention that summer.Which were not riots except in the sense of “police riots,” stirred up by Mayor Daley who explained it […]

The Once and Future Homer, the Reluctant Soul

by D. D. Degg 0 comments May 30, 2020

Soon after The Daily Cartoonist last week issued a First and Last installment featuring Homer, the Reluctant Soul we received an inquiry from creator Wiley Miller. He thanked us for the story but … “I’ve got to ask…is this mere coincidence, or do you know what’s coming up in Non Sequitur?”Reading between the lines The […]

CSotD: Fort Sumter, Minnesota

by Mike Peterson 4 comments May 30, 2020

There’s no point in trying to discuss the current situation chronologically, so let’s start with Matt Wuerker’s cartoon, which assumes a moment midstream. And it assumes an old-fashioned view of calling in the National Guard, because that was how you tamped down vicious local cops back in the days of Little Rock and such. But it was […]

Trina Robbins: A Life Fighting Sexism; Now Ageism

by D. D. Degg 0 comments May 29, 2020

Robbins, who grew up in Queens, N.Y., recalls taking her weekly, 10-cent allowance to the neighborhood candy store and after studying the week’s selection, buying any comic that featured young girls and women. At home, she wrote and illustrated her own comics and dreamt of publication. Robbins insists she did not come from a dysfunctional […]

CSotD: Friday Funnies (Sort of)

by Mike Peterson 0 comments May 29, 2020

There’s not a lot going on over on the editorial side. Statues of Liberty being knelt upon, but not much new insight. But politics have leaked over onto the funny pages, so we’ll look there.First:Will no one rid me of this troublesome website? This Nick Anderson cartoon was taken down at the Red Bubble site at the […]

It had previously had some 10,000.Go give’em some love.

Meanwhile, earlier this same week…

Agnes started this week with a joke so funny it doesn’t look to be surpassed. Agnes and Trout routines are laugh out loud funny (and your mileage will not vary). Meanwhile… The Phantom has foolishly entered The Forbidden Forest where he is trippin’ (and naked).Well, not totally naked; after all there is just so skinny The […]

CSotD: Protecting “our” right not to know

by Mike Peterson 3 comments May 28, 2020

I’m giving JD Crowe top billing because less is more and he kept it plain, but managed to sweep in what happened and why it matters. He didn’t swap in the Statue of Liberty or the Statue of Justice or otherwise adorn a scene that speaks for itself, nor did he ask an obvious rhetorical question […]
