Larry Wright took a buyout from the Detroit News this spring and bought a Corvette…. He takes a buyout, but will continue to do three cartoons a week for the paper, plus consult with the paper on their web site (which he managed since the 90’s) and he’s now the happy owner of a new Corvette.
It’s been a while since I last posted a story about some of the newspaper industry happenings, but I thought this story about McClatchy selling the Philadelphia Daily News and Inquirer to a local Philadelphia group was important for one reason: The new owners do not intend to lay off any staff at either paper. That means editorial cartoonists Signe Wilkinson and Tony Auth’s jobs are safe.
Yesterday I mentioned David Horsey had taken first place for editorial cartooning in the Western Washington SPJ, but he’s not the only cartoonist to go home with an award. Milt Priggee who draws for the Puget Sound Business Journal has also took first place in the category of “cartoons” (meaning local business editorial cartoons) and again in “illustrations.”

Via Mike Lynch, comes word that Paul Conrad has launched a new web site…. Times during which he made President Nixon’s infamous “Enemies List.”The site promotes is a tribute to his work and features a portfolio and a sneak preview at a documentary of his career.
E&P writer, Dave Astor, has a follow up story on The Courier-Journal’s editorial cartooning position that has been vacant since Nick Anderson moved to the Houston Chronicle earlier this year. In short, it hasn’t been filled and to quote their editor, “we still haven’t decided what to do.”Doesn’t sound like it’s going to be filled anytime soon.
Seattle Post-Intelligencer editorial cartoonist, David Horsey, has won first place in the Western Washington chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists.

Pulitzer Prize winning editorial cartoonist Matt Davies has joined the blogosphere according to Editor and Publisher…. From E&P:”My aim,” Davies wrote in his initial post, “is to pry the lid off the process and hardships that a newspaper editorial cartoonist encounters on deadline every day, and share it with whomever cares.”He added: “The best cartoonists should make it look easy.
As posted on the AAEC web site, Tim Menees, who was let go from his 30 years at the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette job as editorial cartoonist, was awarded first place in the Press Club of Western Pennsylvania’s Golden Quill Journalism awards.
The PMC is a great non-profit organization that goes into third world countries and fights overpopulation problems along with sexually transmitted diseases, AIDS and the oppression of women, by educating the local populations and encouraging them to stop their risky behavior through soap operas on the local media. PMC’s innovative approach has been very successful as the third world audiences remember and respond well to the educational dramas they hear on their local radio.The PMC also works to raise the consciousness of population relation issues in the first world, and one of their initiatives was a cartoon contest.

Signe Wilkinson, editorial cartoonist for the Philadelphia Daily News, was one of the most vocal American cartoonist earlier this year during the Danish/Mohammad cartoon riots. The debate is still raging and Signe is still the go to person for comments and reaction.Over at Islam Online there is a Point/Counter-Point wherein Signe takes on Felicity Arbuthnot a British journalist and activist on the topic of whether there should be limits on freedom of expression when it comes to the sacred in religions.
