I woke up this morning feeling really refreshed, but couldn’t tell why until I began going through the political cartoons and realized I’d somehow slept through the past year and missed the mid-term elections entirely. As Steve Breen (Creators) and others have noted, it’s time to start up the 2024 presidential campaign!I’m disappointed, since the […]
By Jan. 25 of every year, about 1,100 journalism entries are submitted to the Pulitzer Prize board. The competition is beyond fierce. So we were disappointed in January when the Pulitzer team quietly replaced the Editorial Cartooning category, which dated back to 1922, with Illustrated Reporting and Commentary. This left cartoonists throwing up their hands […]
Well, yes, Prickly City (AMS), Carmen is correct that this is no longer the Age of Reason, defined asany period in history, especially the 18th century in France, England, etc., characterized by a critical approach to religious, social, and philosophical matters that seeks to repudiate beliefs or systems not based on or justifiable by reason.“The […]
There’s a dust-up among editorial cartoonists over a fellow who cartoons for Cagle under a cloak of anonymity, which seems, by any measure, a violation of journalistic ethics, in which anonymous sources are used only with reluctance, but the stories in which they appear are signed. It seems particularly unnecessary, given that (A) nobody here is […]
Perils of working too far in advance: Prickly City (AMS) doesn’t seem aware that watching gas prices has become nearly a joyous practice.Around here, they’ve gone down 30 cents since my last fill-up, which means that, instead of thinking I’d better top off before they go any higher, I’m wringing out every mile in hopes […]
Scrolling through the sea of posts, pictures, and memes online can make conservatives feel like they’re outcasts. Endless screeds claiming anyone to the right of Mao is a bigoted and hateful person make up most of Twitter, Facebook, and Instagram. But a growing cadre of conservative creatives is trying to make its mark online and […]
Here’s a bit of bad news from Jimmy Margulies (KFS), which doesn’t fit my politics, because I’m far from ready to fly the white flag over this country, but it does fit my current mood, which is decidedly Eeyorean. It seems Joe Biden took a few minutes to intervene with Russia on behalf of Brittney Griner, […]
Cartoonist and comics historian Bob Harvey has passed away. Robert Charles (Bob) Harvey (a.k.a. R. C. Harvey) June 22, 1937 – July 7, 2022 Bob’s friends Tom Tanquary and Carolyn Weller have informed the comics world that R.C. Harvey has passed away due to complications following a fall. From Bob’s daughter Julia:Last week Dad fell and […]
I’m not in the mood for politics today, but Kevin Siers’ comment on the resignation of Boris Johnson is simply too good to delay. It’s one of those things where, once you see it, the connecting concepts are obvious, but combining Britain’s lion with Bert Lahr’s lion must have struck Siers like a thunderbolt. As a writer, […]
Editorial cartoonist Graeme MacKay celebrates his 25th anniversary with The Hamilton Spectator. … this week marks the 25 year milestone since officially beginning my role on July 7, 1997, as staff editorial cartoonist at The Hamilton Spectator. Previous to then my illustrations regularly appeared on a freelance basis in this paper as well as several […]
In order to start a day of mythbusting on an apolitical note, here’s a cartoon Rich Powell shared on Facebook the other day, though I note by the date that he drew it some time ago. It’s about the nursery rhyme about little piggies, used, as demonstrated in this 1857 painting by Lilly Martin-Spencer, to make […]
Joel Pett gets a laugh and helps lower our expectations of each other this morning, given how very little of what ought to be painfully obvious appears to be so. The past several days have seen a display of how many know so little about American History or about how our government works.Scott Stantis (Counterpoint) posted […]
Bill Bramhall depicts the Fourth of July in the New Normal, in which we can’t always distinguish the traditional fireworks from the new tradition of killing each other. My favorite part of the cartoon is that she’s only moderately concerned; it’s not like she’s leaping from the couch or he’s poised at the window.Maybe it’s […]
We landed in America today, the 4th of July. Last week, Sophie and I donated or sold just about everything we’d accumulated over 30-odd years living in Australia. The stuff we kept was crammed into two bloated suitcases before we jumped on a plane to start a new life. No plan, no job waiting for […]
