I don’t have an iron-clad rule about avoiding political cartoons, as regular readers will know and newcomers can find by scrolling through the recent past. But I’ve been consciously putting them second or third in the daily queue as I collect the three or four potential candidates for CSOTD, for a couple of reasons. One is […]
Lawyer jokes are too easy, but that doesn’t mean you should avoid them entirely. Otherwise, we’d miss things like today’s Non Sequitur.I don’t dislike lawyers in private life. They are, for the most part, intelligent and well-informed, with a quick wit necessary to the profession which is then further honed on years of noting irregularities, […]
Notice in today’s Blondie that, in this carpool of four white folks ticking off their favorite part of the Thanksgiving meal, not one of them said, “macaroni and cheese.”I’m highlighting the venerable old strip not because today’s installment cracked me up but because it segues neatly into an infuriating example of rampant online stupidity. In case […]
Sandra Bell Lundy is an expert at capturing small moments, and today’s “Between Friends” is a good example of how she likes to celebrate and deflate the absurdities and inconsistencies of life.It took me awhile to get into this strip, because she employs a realistic level of self-deprecating humor that is not the norm, even […]
Well, not quite new, since this is Episode Two of The Conjurers, a weekly on-line strip by Brian Anderson that updates Mondays, but Episode One is only a click away, so catching up is no problem.Brian also does the very different syndicated strip “Dog Eat Doug,” which, I think, proves nothing except that it’s possible […]
In today’s Sally Forth, Ted shows that he is, in fact, not completely insane by taking a stand against Star Wars revisionism. Lucas’s constant tweaks are not only a betrayal of his fans but a distressingly unnecessary example of how history is not only written by winners but revised by them as well.Nothing against “director’s […]
Over at Daily Kos, Jen Sorensen riffs on what happened when our children stepped into the crossfire between — among — those who care about them and the hordes of science haters, Obama haters, radical anarchists and lobbyists.Poor little mushrooms just popped up and got mowed down. Never had a chance. For those who missed it, […]
You’re not going to get a lot out of today’s CSOTD without going to the actual site, Cartoon Movement, because there you will find 10 pages of Sarah Glidden’s reporting from Occupy Miami, of which this is only the first.Let me assure you that it is worth the trip and, not only does 10 pages […]
I’ve been kind of waiting for “The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee” to come up with something unusually brilliant so that I could address a issue to the gathered multitudes. And here we are, with a strip so disgusting that it would, indeed, have made CSOTD without any overriding motivation on my part. The only thing I’ll […]
Today’s Free Range is, on the one hand, rather silly. And we like that around here. And, on the other hand, there is a serious point about the concept of “a jury of your peers.” I suppose, in the days of Magna Carta (a few years ago, we stopped saying “the Magna Carta,” for reasons that […]
This is so cool. Legendary cartoonist Sergio Aragones has joined the Team Cul de Sac effort with a piece that stands alone as a tribute to Alice’s scary powers of being Alice. And the coolest part is that, giant in the form that he is, he’s not necessarily the biggest giant in the list of cartoonists […]
One of the advantages of a DailyInk subscription is the ability to add classic strips to your daily diet, and I’ve really been enjoying this 1952 Rip Kirby storyline. Not only is the art terrific, but the pacing is equally painstaking. Alex Raymond has been setting up this storyline for over a month and we have […]
Ted Rall takes a swipe at the latest highly qualified journalist hired at NBC.We’ve always had a flare for nepotism in this country, and I’m not referring to John Quincy Adams, whose bona fides were pretty well independently established before he ran for the White House. No, never mind, let’s include him, too. And throw […]
Hard on the heels of yesterday’s rant over facts-that-ain’t, we have this Jeff Danziger pot shot at poor old Bill O’Reilly’s book — described by its publisher as “A riveting historical narrative of the heart-stopping events surrounding the assassination of Abraham Lincoln, and the first work of history from mega-bestselling author Bill O’Reilly” — which […]
I have some problems with Wikipedia, but I think, on the whole, that its self-correcting structure actually works.Often.Depending on the topic. But today’s xkcd hits at a major vulnerability not just of Wikipedia but of history in particular and of writing in general, which is that, once they’ve found a citation, a lot of writers consider […]
