Future Phantom News From KFS Re: Tony DePaul and Alex Segura

King Features Syndicate (KFS) Editor Amy Anderson is sharing news about the departure of Tony DePaul as the writer of The Phantom and the new daily and Sunday writer Alex Segura.

“We have news to share about the next chapter of The Phantom.

“This December, Tony DePaul will conclude his 27-year tenure as writer of the adventure strip. Tony has helped carry forward Lee Falk’s creation for nearly three decades, adding to the legend of The Ghost Who Walks and giving generations of readers stories to follow and remember. We thank him for his many contributions to The Phantom and its enduring legacy.”

  1. I caught up on Tony DePaul’s writing today via his enjoyable blog, where he had shared a compilation of strips fleshing out the original Phantom’s origins and motivations. Good writer.

I wish KFS saw the value in a lengthy tenure with a creator. Possibly they think a “comic book” writer will bring extra eyes to the daily strip. This is, unfortunately, giving too much credit to comic book readers.

    1. I think 27 years is actually a pretty good run! 😂 I know DePaul understandably doesn’t feel great about getting removed, but that’s a career’s worth of work he should be proud of.

  2. I hope Segura does a good job on Phantom. He had a lot of ideas for *Mara Llave*—it’s a pity that the strip had such an irregular publication schedule.

      1. I had completely forgotten about Segura’s writing of Mara Llave.

  3. Or…out with the old writer, in with the A.I. chatbot……

  4. Now all that’s left to do is relaunch Mandrake.
