Today, Joe Martin’s Willie & Ethel delivers an unintentional spot-on response to Slate’s … um … let me look it up … “Farhad Manjoo.”I’ve been a fan of Willie and Ethel for decades. I never heard of Farhad Manjoo until he wrote a commentary in Slate condemning the Pulitzer Prize committee for awarding a prize […]
When I first looked at today’s Rhymes with Orange, I thought it was going to be a riff on excessive government spending, tied in to the Secret Service scandal (such as it is) and the GSA scandal (which I’m tired of). There actually are secret government cafeterias, and the food there is reportedly rather above the […]
I usually rely on Red and Rover for my nostalgic trips back into childhood, but today’s Soup to Nutz, though the strip is ostensibly set in the present, brings up a memory from the Olden Days. For those too young to know, comic books in them thar days were partially supported by advertising, and the advertisers […]
Liza Donnelly posted this to her blog. I like it because it is open-ended, which goes back to last week’s rant that included an anecdote in which Ezra Pound (I think) snaps “It’s a poem. It doesn’t mean anything, lady. It’s just a goddam poem.”Well, this is just a goddam cartoon, but it’s brilliant and I’m […]
One of my favorite parts of The Brilliant Mind of Edison Lee is the stunned incomprehension on the faces of his contemporaries. They’re not hostile to him; they just can’t figure out what this kid is talking about, except that it isn’t what they’re used to.And the realistic part — and, in the creative arts, […]
Drew Friedman posted this wonderful Hershfeld classic on his Facebook page:And my immediate reaction was that it looked like a contest waiting to be launched. So here’s an annotated version:Make your best guesses. Here’s my list, and it is not complete or at all canonical. Please add, or disagree.
Yesterday, I added little to Darrin Bell’s cartoon because it would have dulled the point of his commentary.Today, I can add little to Mike Baldwin’s Cornered because there’s nothing much to add except that it really, really cracked me up in the best possible way … after a pause. And then every time I looked at […]
Actually, I’ve been trying to keep it down to 750 words lately.Today, even 20 seems futile.Well done, Darrin.
I hadn’t really thought about this issue until Tak Bui brought it up today on PC and Pixel.Opticians use the term “tromboning” to describe a person moving their reading material back and forth, looking for the point at which their aging eyes will focus on it. And the older I get, the more tromboning I […]
The auction of original art from Team Cul de Sac is now online and happening through June 10. There is some truly collectible work here as well as some fun stuff, and it benefits Parkinson’s Research in the name of a great cartoonist, a friend of the blog and a valued friend of the blogger.Have […]
Deflocked takes on one of the oddities of the current political circus. The USDA provides subsidies to schools for lunch programs, and has decided that, in order to qualify for assistance from taxpayers, schools should not add to the health problems of our nation’s children by serving them fatty, sugary, sodium-laden foods. This has been met with […]
We learned this week that there is no “Republican War on Women” and that Republicans are actually pro-choice and rather militant about it.No, not that kind of choice. In fact, Jan Brewer, Arizona’s Republican governor, just signed a bill into law stating that life begins before sex, which will help in the party’s ultimate goal […]
Tom Spurgeon’s Comics Reporter is one of my most important stops of the morning, despite the fact that about 90% of what he talks about relates to comic books, which are a different medium from the strips I talk about. For one thing, the sheer volume of stuff he posts every day means that I’m going […]
Okay, this The City strip is actually from last week or last strip or however often Derf updates. GoComics doesn’t seem to be updating its non-dailies very well and I’ve had to go poke around for some of the political cartoons. Most of what I had missed was that apparently when Mike Wallace got to heaven, […]
I have a daughter-in-law who is a psychology professor and to whom I periodically send good shrink toons that she can use to liven up lectures or that may simply give her a laff. But I’ve told her she has to keep track of Pros & Cons on her own because it’s so consistently funny […]
