“Monty” explores the world of presidential polls. The back-and-forth in the current campaign is, as suggested yesterday, getting to the point where ridiculous things about binders are crowding out more substantive arguments. But, then again, maybe we really are in a world in which facts and logic are not relevant and smart campaigning should ignore […]
Adam Zyglis made good use of the binder concept. And a few others came close, but the binder meme seems to me a pretty good example of what’s wrong with this whole group-participation form of presidential campaign: A lot of piling on over something of very little significance; a lot of straining over gnats and swallowing […]
As Chris Baldwin notes over at the latest Space Trawler, the two of us went down to Elmira, NY, yesterday to research a children’s story we’re working on. And he’s right that the archivist at the Chemung County Historical Society is a rare resource. Rather than just trotting out the usual pieces and telling us […]
This Frank Reynolds panel from Punch is one of the most beloved classics in the medium among, of course, those who identify with the poor fellow in it. As a weekly newspaper columnist for several years and now nearly three-year daily blogger, I have no patience for the “I couldn’t think of anything” column, in […]
There are times when Retail gets into crabby, insider niches that only those who have worked at their local mall will find funny. On the other hand, “refreshingly honest” is a compliment, and it can also be a public service. For instance, I can justify making the “It must be free!” joke when an item won’t […]
My final comment on yesterday’s unscheduled discursion into healthy relationships, via Deflocked: Meanwhile, a technical screw-up allows for an explanation of how Sunday comics work. Here’s how today’s Barney & Clyde looked on GoComics: Strange, no?For those not immersed in the business, here’s what’s up: Printing involves working with CMYK files, meaning that, while a color picture […]
There have been many Lance Armstrong cartoons this week, mostly (yawn) featuring a Livestrong bracelet with variations on the inscription. And, of course, when you work that hard to establish some kind of iconic object to be your public image, it’s going to show up, though you hope in the context of a crappy Pearly Gates […]
Each day, “That is Priceless” takes a piece of classic-era art and gives it a gag caption. Steve Melcher is funny — which he ought to be, since he’s a TV writer — and his blog, though a little unattended lately, has a backlog of gags, including several rude enough that they probably won’t make […]
Three places you should spend time today, described briefly and linked. No lilies will be gilded in the making of today’s CSOTD.The Big Deal today is emerging reports on the Kenosha Festival of Cartooning, which I really wanted to go to. And, seeing Mike Cope’s extensive collection of photos and Tom Racine’s video makes me […]
Randy Glasbergen’s “Better Half” is like the player who, when you look at the box score after the game, you find was one of the high-scorers even though he didn’t take any spectacular shots from beyond the three-point line. He simply makes the shots he takes, and it adds up.Today, Glasbergen hits on a point […]
Tom Tomorrow, an endangered species, on the recent debates. But, y’know, not recent enough. We want the truth and we want it right now, but, if we have to choose, we’ll take “right now.”So the consulate in Benghazi is attacked, and the first report is that a mob got out of control, stormed the place and killed […]
A bit of well-timed subtlety from Sandra Bell Lundy at Between Friends. Subtle in that you may have to look twice to get the point and I suspect a lot of readers will be scratching their heads over this one. “Subtle” is not much prized in mass media, especially when the artwork is shrunken down to […]
Doonesbury decries the lack of information available in the Information Society. There’s plenty of information, of course, but you have to go look for it, which, even for a dedicated info-scrounger, is not so easy. Even Google News is driven by what other people think is worth knowing, and so, while it’s a pretty good resource, […]
Seems odd to be returning to the topic of second-time-around romance within the same week, but today’s Close to Home brought forth such a hearty “Yes!” from me that I couldn’t rule it out on the basis of having recently discussed that sort of thing.Besides, romantic disasters never go out of fashion. That previous post was […]
Big Bird as the takeaway from Wednesday’s debate has been a predictable boon for political cartoonists. Facebook Photoshoppers were putting gags up while the debate was still in progress, and the pros weren’t far behind them.Nick Anderson riffs on one element, which is the disparity between the goal of hunting down bin Laden and the promise […]
