According to this Comics Beat story, Target will be the sole dispenser of a new line of Disney graphic novels about princesses.Well, good. We need more princess-promotion these days.Perhaps the best place to start would be by conceding that a lot of children’s content is more extruded than created, and that, while I cheerfully watched […]
Let’s start with the current Vintage Juliet Jones storyline, in which quiet, submissive Vassily the Exchange Student has been forced to put on the gloves with the Class Bully, and we all saw this result coming and Stan Drake sure dragged it out.The original ran in 1961, which I mention because there was a time […]
Wiley Miller is in the midst of an impressive run of news/deadline synchronicity, with this Non Sequitur appearing just as Laura Ingraham announces on national television that she is not the unwitting victim of some subconscious prejudice but is, in fact, a fully intentional white supremacist who wishes to have our government enact blatantly racist […]
(Signe Wilkinson)Well, thanks for coming. That’s all for today.———–Okay, perhaps a little commentary, though I think Wilkinson’s pen drop pretty much says it.There’s some argument to be made that these aren’t Trump’s lawyers but Manafort’s, but that seems like a distinction without a difference. As Dear Leader said, Manafort is being treated like Al Capone: You […]
After reading the write-up for Colonial Comics: New England, 1750-1775 at Comics Worth Reading, I made a mistake that has both positive and negative outcomes for readers here: I accidentally ordered the Kindle version instead of the paperback. The positive is that I was able to sit down and read it sooner and can report that […]
Let’s start with a salute to fortuitous timing by Wiley Miller, whose Non Sequitur by, I assume, happenstance hits the comics pages while Wells Fargo’s incompetence, venality and lousy response is in the rest of the newspaper. In another bit of interesting timing, NPR has just started a series on the housing crisis with the observation […]
I will confess to going through a burn-out phase at the moment, in which I find today’s Reality Check refreshing. All commentators, including cartoonists, go through these phases where I have of late,—but wherefore I know not,—lost all my mirth, forgone all custom of exercises; and indeed it goes so heavily with my disposition that this goodly […]
Bado has coverage on his blog of an interesting auction, in which the only known copy, outside the Library of Congress, of the newspaper in which Ben Franklin’s original “Join, or Die” cartoon appeared was auctioned off for the minimum bid of $40,000, which went to $50,000 with the buyer’s premium.“Interesting,” in part because he includes […]
Matt Wuerker introduces our theme for the day, which is futility. The economy has grown four percent and, for all the hoo-hah, you’d think we’d developed a car that runs on plastic straws. It’s a very good number. It’s the best we’ve done in nearly four years, which is to say, we did it under Obama, too, […]
(A non-political look at the week just passed.)The few days I spent in Denver last month saved my sanity but left me homesick for the Front Range. People joke about “it’s a dry heat,” but it was ten degrees warmer there than it has been here in New Hampshire and I was far more comfortable. The […]
(Ann Telnaes)(L’il Donnie)Jeff Sessions is a busy, busy man, and it’s little wonder that he hasn’t time to cater to every one of Dear Leader’s needs.Telnaes attributes it to his natural tendency to stick his nose into other people’s private affairs, while Norton gets an additional laugh by making it all a bit of confusion […]
Mike Luckovich on a topic nobody cares about anymore. As was noted here in a recent Candorville, media attention has largely moved on from separated families despite the problem not having been solved. But about seven hundred kids are now orphaned by the incompetent cruelty of a policy that separated families and then lost track of […]
“Do you bite your thumb at us, sir?” “I do bite my thumb.” “But do you bite your thumb at us, sir?” (Aside) “Is the law of our side if I say ‘yes’?” (Aside) “No.” “No, sir, I do not bite my thumb at you, sir, but I do bite my thumb, sir.” “Do you […]
Breaking (Good) News: All charges against Malaysian cartoonist Zunar have been dropped and he is not only a free man but apparently free to keep poking his sharp pen at corrupt authorities.Between the immediacy of the news and the somewhat opaque nature of Malaysian politics, it’s a little hard to sort out the details, but […]
Too Much Coffee Man leads off today with a not-all-that-cryptic observation that things which once passed as cute, or at least normal, no longer do.I had a sort of half-memory that the old nursery rhyme was pegged to some historic figure, but the more I looked into it, the more it seemed that it’s been […]
