Joy of Tech comments on the sort-of-sudden demise of Google Plus, and I find myself somewhat constrained to comment because I pretty much hated Google Plus from the start. It’s not them, it’s me. Back at the dawn of time, when AOL was new, I got on their Instant Messenger service long enough to start to […]
Existential Comics explores the morality of sharing excess with the poor, a long enough comic that I feel constrained about re-printing the whole thing here, so go read the rest and be prepared for both a large laugh and an even larger twinge of “How did we get here?”Every major religion demands charity, though there […]
Cartoonists have spoken about the fire hose issue, that the crises are coming at us faster than they can be drawn, and I’m not sure why the woman in Joe Heller‘s cartoon isn’t wearing gloves and carrying two rakes, but I’m certainly willing to step away and focus on fall for a bit. It’s becoming very […]
Moderately Confused mostly got a chuckle today because, while I don’t play the fiddle, or even the violin, I am convinced that “The Devil Went Down to Georgia” is probably an annoyingly simple song to play.I base this theory on the number of clearly crapola garage-country bands that feature it, and the fact that, while […]
(David Fitzsimmons)(Drew Sheneman)And so here’s a juxtaposition of where we’ve landed, which is a strong message of partisanship and power over justice and mercy. We’ve had, in addition, a large helping of whataboutism, which requires ignoring the timeline and ignoring the number of progressives who have said that, had Bill Clinton’s personal flaws come to the […]
Ann Telnaes gets it absolutely right on a level that hits me personally, and perhaps it’s a chance to talk about the system, because I’m sure tired of talking about the issue. For about a year and a half, I edited a small, twice-weekly community paper in western Maine.Back in 2006-8, Maine had two Senators noted […]
Tom Cheney gets the top spot for drawing a tin-can telephone with a taut string. He’s originally from my part of the world, which is a good thing in itself, but the important thing is that he’s old enough to remember when comic books were for kids and had instructions for a tin-can telephone in about […]
So here we are, and, as Jim Morin notes, we’ve even had an FBI investigation of the latest charges against Brett Kavanaugh, which was conducted along the same lines as the administration uses in exploring environmental science: Round up the stuff that supports your position and avoid the parts that don’t.Which would just be liberal […]
This Maddie Dai cartoon from the New Yorker struck me at an opportune time, which is to say, just after CXC, which featured a large collection of young cartoonists hawking their books, many, many of which fall into that third category.I remarked to someone closer to my demographic that it made me once more grateful […]
So we’ve reached the point where only purveyors of altie-comics like Tom Tomorrow have the chops to handle the absurdity of this mess.I wish people would stop talking about whether Kavanaugh and his pal assaulted this particular girl on that particular date in that specific house. It’s not that I don’t believe her, but, as […]
It isn’t really anywhere; It’s somewhere else instead. — A.A. MilneJamestown is probably classified as “Western New York,” though it has many aspects of “The Southern Tier,” as well, both of which are good things. You can get beef on weck there and you’ll see rolling hills and, in about another week, some good leaf […]
I expected Rob Rogers‘ session — the second of two “Cartooning in the Age of Trump” presentations at CXC — to be the highlight of my weekend, and it was. The above two panels from his 24-panel Nib cartoon, “I Was Fired For Criticizing Trump,” which ran in July, provide an insight into why. Some cartoonists […]
I shouldn’t have promised CXC coverage for today, since, while I don’t believe in jinxes, my GPS apparently does, turning a five-hour final stretch into eight, which means I arrived late for the opening speeches and then found that the after-dealie was too loud and crowded for much conversation anyway. However, this gives us a chance […]
If you came here for refuge from the storm, apologies, but, since I’m locked into CXC coverage starting tomorrow, we need to look at yesterday’s weirdness a little today or it’ll be totally outdated. We’ll get to to the funnies in a minute.Adam Zyglis takes the prize for this cartoon that wraps up a very […]
With all that’s been going on in the news, we could all use a good laugh, but that laugh the other day was not good. There have been several cartoons depicting Trump as a clown or a stand-up comedian, some better than others, but I think Jeff Danziger catches the moment best by depicting a greatly […]
