So this greeted me at Twitter this morning, and refreshing, or coming back later, didn’t help, but logging out and signing back in restored things, whatever that portends.Mostly, it was a clue as to where to start, which is with thisJuxtaposition of the Day(Graeme Keyes)(Jeremy Banx)Two takes on roughly the same concept, but with enough […]
Ann Telnaes packs a lot into this commentary on Trump’s dinner with Kanye West and Nick Fuentes, mostly by saying little. That is, while others have gone over the top with exaggerations in condemning the event, her only distortion is putting Fuentes — an outright and unabashed white supremacist — in a KKK hood.Well, unless you […]
Baby Blues (AMS) touches on a regrettable consequence of our centralized corporate world. When I was a kid in the ’50s, there were all sorts of small amusement parks scattered throughout the country, including several designed by Arto Monaco, who created a number of those imagination-sparking parks in the years after the war, including Santa’s Workshop […]
I was going to let DD Degg cover the Charles Schulz tributes today, but this Arctic Circle (KFS) deserves some separate commentary.Alex Hallatt has been doing “Grown-Up Peanuts” gags all week, but today’s strikes at her usual health/environmental themes, and pinged my receptors for a couple of reasons. We’re long seen research indicating that farm kids […]
Man Overboard offered a familiar but important observation on Thanksgiving, which is, as widely known and often said, that history is written by the victors. It’s true, at least in terms of popular history, which is largely what matters, since popular history is how a nation establishes its identity. There’s probably no better example of this than […]
Pogo starts us off on Thanksgiving, 1972, with a typically backhanded bit of thankfulness from Porkypine, their opposite characters being a high point of the strip.I hadn’t remembered that Charles Barsotti, far better known for his New Yorker cartoons, had a strip back then, but this particular episode is also a reminder that Earth Day […]
It’s not always easy or possible or productive to separate comics into either humor or politics, and Prickly City (AMS) has always been a political strip. In this case, we see the Republican party gain nominal control of the house only to have the Freedom Caucus preparing to play the temper-tantrum gridlocking roles Democrats have faced […]
Colombian cartoonist Raul Fernando Zuleta (Cartoon Movement) leads off today’s discussion of the 2022 World Cup: Qatar dangles money before FIFA and the TV networks, who in turn dangle money before the soccer clubs and TV viewers give the results to viewers, who don’t get so much as a taste of all that lovely baksheesh […]
Now only is GoComics still off-line (DD Degg offers some ways to find the missing comics), but Comics Kingdom has inadvertently offered its solidarity by hanging up and delivering yesterday’s comics, except for the Vintage strips, which are decades old but as up to date as they’re supposed to be.Fortunately, I’ve been holding a few […]
David Horsey points out a current crisis throughout American democracy, though he’s referencing a specific race for the House in northwestern Washington state. On the national scale, relief over the failure of the projected Red Wave ought not to be too joyously celebrated, given the razor-thin margins in the majority of widely watched contests. We can be […]
I’ve been thinking of posting that, dammit, there are two O’s in “Mastodon,” but realized it would only result in people saying that they were opening accounts on Moostadon. And I had a lot of trouble finding this 1959 Peanuts strip because Google Images assumes — wisely — that people can’t spell and kept correcting […]
Today’s top story in the media world is last night’s ghastly near-collapse of a tottering Twitter under the tone-deaf management of alleged genius, Elon Musk, as encapsulated here by Bill Bramhall.Oliver Darcy has excellent coverage at Reliable Sources, but the immediate crisis appears to be that, in the latest of his nonsensical edicts, Musk told […]
I’ve often noted that the current level of disinformation is hard on “bland restatement cartoons,” in which absurd characters say exaggerated versions of what real people are saying in all sincerity. In this case, however, Tom Tomorrow tackles the dilemma by keeping the exaggeration to a scant minimum, with the only real hyperbole being that cable […]
I usually let DD Degg handle news, but since I covered the AAEC convention last month, I’ll announce that the videos of presentations there are now available here, and they are worth bingeing if you care about the medium. And since I devoted an entire day’s posting to it, I would particularly invite you to settle back […]
If I’m going to steal a headline from Dana Summers (Tribune), the least I can do is let him bat lead-off today, which also solves the conundrum of how to even begin organizing the embarrassment of cartoon riches that have emerged since last night’s announcement. We could get this kind of instant reaction all the time […]
