I’ve long thought that “This Time It’s Personal” should have been a category in Jumping the Shark, a point at which you knew the writers had given up and the show was over, like the time on ER when Julianna Margulies became a hostage in a store that was being robbed and we were treated […]
Wiley Miller is notably unimpressed with social media, so today’s Non Sequitur (AMS) is no surprise, though for someone who avoids it, he’s sure tapped into the current state of Twitter in particular. As for leaving, no, the voices won’t let you. I’ve compared it in the past to the interactive TV in “Fahrenheit 451,” which […]
Today’s Pickles (AMS) reminds me that this is a time of year when I am thrilled to be retired. There is a news gap between Christmas and New Years when there is nothing to report on except for accidents, murders, fires and suchlike, which sounds like a lot but isn’t, though I suppose now that major […]
Jonesy offers an historical/political start to an examination of cartoons that, upon giving them some thought, aren’t funny, because this one did make me smile. It is, of course, a gag about the famous Christmas truce of WWI, in which British and German troops stopped shooting at each other and played football in No Man’s Land.It […]
Jeff Koterba shows that less is more with a simple response to Brittney Griner’s release. The ball/ball-and-chain transposition is solid without being excessively clever and he doesn’t presume the result of the throw. More important, he doesn’t argue over whether half a loaf is, indeed, better than none, but celebrates an American homecoming.Granted, it’s fair […]
Candorville (KFS) pokes some fun at its former hosting site, but, for those who haven’t been following DD Degg’s coverage here, the outage at GoComics seems to have fouled up their ability to receive and process strips, such that they’re featuring a lot of reruns at the moment. This makes it hard to take a comedy […]
Several cartoonists have commented on the Congressional Gold Medal Ceremony, in which the parents of murdered Capitol Police Officer Brian Sicknick — and some other officers’ and their families — accepted the medal, shook Sen. Charles Schumer’s hand, then walked past Mitch McConnell and Kevin McCarthy.IMHO, John Deering got it best.Ken Sicknick, Brian’s brother, explained […]
I’m not sure how to comment on this Michael Ramirez (Creators) cartoon, though I lived near the US Air Force Academy and toured the mews with their falcon trainers.Apparently the Twitter falcon hunts media and the falconer carries around a package of politics. I have no idea what he’s saying, though I do know that […]
Rick McKee posted this yesterday, but, upon closer examination, it appears to be from two years ago. That would normally disqualify it, but, given how long we’ve been chasing the Hunter Biden will-o-the-wisp, the commentary is as fresh as the controversy, while the gist of the piece fits in with today’s topic, which is to […]
Social media has been full of people complaining that neither the Washington Post nor the NY Times led their front pages yesterday with news of Trump’s declaration that the Constitution should be overturned in order to make him president, but I think Gary Markstein (Creators) may have the most cogent analysis.Trump wants to hack up […]
It may seem odd to begin a discussion of the end of America with today’s Buckets (AMS), but what may have struck Greg Cravens as ironic exaggeration a few weeks ago has become chillingly relevant, now that Donald Trump has finally declared his contempt for the US Constitution and the rule of law.I doubt this […]
Daniel Boris offers a Juxtaposition of Himself: Two versions of a single cartoon.I prefer the first iteration, specifically because the convictions don’t necessarily lead back to Trump. That is, Rhodes and Meggs would have been convicted of seditious conspiracy (and the others of interference) without any need to prove they were incited by Trump and, […]
I was thinking of using the headline “WGASA Forever,” but several of today’s cartoons are about things we really should care about. Not this one, but I gather a lot of people in Britain besides Christian Adams are steamed by the fact that The Prince Formerly Known As The Prince and his wife have made a documentary […]
I really like The Other Coast (Creators) because Adrian Raeside has a solid handle on dog behavior.Usually.I have to assume he doesn’t have a dog that requires grooming or he’d know that the first instinct, after a $70 trip to the groomer, is to luxuriate in something that will restore a more dogcentric look and […]
Tom Tomorrow reflects on the fleeting relevance of political cartoons, and he’s right that the more specific a critique, the sooner it becomes irrelevant, or, at least, we should hope it does.I bought Herblock: The Life and Work of the Great Political Cartoonist, which includes a DVD of all his cartoons, and, while he was, […]
