Obviously, the name of the blog suggests only featuring one strip per day, but I thought it noteworthy that two cartoonists — Lalo Alcaraz and Darrin Bell — chose to salute the retiring Cathy on the same day. And a pretty good unintentional segue between them, don’t you think? Cathy Guisewhite’s decision to retire is […]
Brewster Rockit, Space Guy, has gradually degenerated into random, stupid jokes like this.I’m really becoming quite fond of it.
(This is the last in a series of interviews I did with cartoonists in 2003 for the Post-Star of Glens Falls, NY. It was roughly timed to co-incide with Blondie and Dagwood’s 75th anniversary strip, which we ran extra-large by dropping a half-page of ad space in the Sunday comics section and rotating it 90 […]
Agnes is apparently channeling St. Augustine.*I like the idea of “playing the holy card.” In the good old days of meatless Fridays, holy cards were like baseball cards for Catholics, only there would be a prayer on the back instead of statistics about the saint pictured on the front. They were also printed on paper […]
This site is dedicated to presenting the best comic strip of the day, or at least one that made me laugh, which sets it aside from all the bitchy little websites that post comics they don’t like and make snarky comments about them.Which means that, when I come across a hackneyed cartoon about those kids […]
Some symbols are so standard that they can lose impact, but Tony Auth makes excellent use of both the Statue of Liberty and the Klan regalia in this cartoon. I’m not as blown away by his labels — I think it was an unnecessary complication to tie in the GOP and the Tea Party Movement […]
Do you suppose this is why the Rolling Stones released a singles version of “Honky Tonk Women” that didn’t involve a car horn?First time I heard the album version, it was playing on my car stereo at about 5 in the afternoon on the Cross Westchester Expressway. The album version is called “Country Honk” and […]
I’ve been waiting for the right moment to feature “Pirate Cove” here, and it’s been a long wait, because the convoluted storylines of this strip don’t offer a lot of good entry points. Yes, the artwork is horrible. You’ll get used to it. You’ll even start to like it. But let’s skip the artwork for […]
This weekend’s Madam & Eve is one of a series of strips standing up against a proposed change in the law that would restrict press freedom in that young democracy. The occasional thuggery and corruption of the government has provided cartoonists with some good material in recent years. However, the response to their jibes, and […]
(This interview with Garfield creator Jim Davis is one of a series of cartoonist profiles I did in 2003 for the Post-Star of Glens Falls, NY)Garfield was born where a lot of cats are born: In the basement. He sure didn’t stay there. Jim Davis had worked for nine years as an assistant on the […]
Rina Piccolo seems to be hitting her stride with her new web-only strip, Velia, Dear, as the characters, tone and pace begin to gel into something solid. The latest strip is her best so far, and a real gem. When I read the first panel, given the recovering-Catholic angst prominent in the strip, I expected something […]
Here’s what makes today’s The Duplex work so well: The concept is okay, but it’s not brilliant. The touch of having his shrink — rather than a spouse or a friend — point out such a thing is brilliant.
Cartoonists Ted Rall, Matt Bors and Steven Cloud have left on a trip that will take them through Afghanistan, with visits to Pakistan and Iran. Michael Cavna interviewed them for the Washington Post’s “Comics Riff” earlier this week and sums up their mission, which is basically to go over there and find out what’s going […]
And maybe you have to be of a certain age to read today’s Speed Bump and think of a moose.
Timing is everything in comedy. Thanks to syndicate deadlines, a lot of cartoons are just starting to cycle into their tar-on-the-beach story arcs as that part of the disaster is no longer a major issue. Tant pis.But today’s “Edge City” hits at a point in time at which Facebook has suddenly been deluged with outrageous […]
