John Lewis, together with Andrew Aydin and cartoonist Nate Powell, has put together the first volume of a history that needs to be told, and read, and absorbed.Today’s blog entry begins as “March, Book One” begins, on the Edmund Pettus Bridge in Selma, Alabama, where a peaceful march was attacked, first by Alabama State Troopers, […]
Kevin Kallaugher neatly explains what’s going on. It is a riff, of course, on one of the absolute classics of The Far Side, which was followed by a second take, both of which adorned the bulletin board in my kitchen until they were quite yellow and curled, or possibly until I moved, I forget which. And […]
Luann Cartoonist Greg Evans and I are roughly of an age, and there is always, at the age we are roughly of, the nagging doubt about how much the world has changed and how much is just you getting old. Some of it is the inevitable process of aging. There genuinely is a mosquito ring tone […]
Back when Ellen Degeneres was a standup, before she became a skinny white Oprah, she had a gag in her act that went, “My grandmother started walking five miles a day when she was sixty. She’s ninety-seven now, and we don’t know where the hell she is.”It’s not just a great joke, but it’s a […]
Couple of quickies before we get to the hard core issue of the day:Two minds with but a single thought: This pairing ranks as one of the more odd coincidences I’ve seen on the comics page lately, since I haven’t seen anything about bananas in the news or rocketing around social media. I’m kind of […]
This blog is generally chicken one day and feathers the next. This was definitely a day of chickens, with such a banquet of good stuff that I had to eliminate some that would have been the only focus on another day.Let’s start with some interesting beginnings: “Mark Trail” is not generally known for incisive storytelling […]
Keith Knight addresses the plight of the Oppressed White Man, deprived of his civil rights by, well, the rise of civil rights over the past half-century.Which is to say most of the whiners weren’t even born when their right to be ignorant was revoked.Or at least watered-down by being shared. Today, thanks to the progress […]
I remember, back in the days when I believed good work would find a spot, and when I believed I knew how to define good work, and when I believed that the world needed one more introspective novel about college, being particularly incensed when a genuinely-bad-by-any-measure college novel was published not only to some fanfare […]
Dylan Horrocks posted a link to this comic on Facebook, with the brief message “Read this comic by Pat Grant right now. Just read it, OK? Now. (you won’t forget it, ever)”I’m tempted to just say “I agree” and sign off, but I’ll take things a little bit further. However, any substantive commentary on the piece would […]
Foxtrot — which is still new on Sundays, though in reruns the rest of the week — scores with a poke at the exaltation of stupidity on televisionAs much as we may rail at the poor nutrition in fast food (including yesterday’s yogurt/yoghurt rant), at least, if a food company makes a bogus claim about […]
Brian Basset’s Red and Rover is rarely a fall-on-the-floor laugh fest, but its nostalgic portrayal of a boy and his dog in a recent but unspecified past is always a nice stop on the comic highway.Today, he outdoes himself with a back-to-school strip that rises far above the glut of predictable back-to-school strips.I wrote the […]
Yesterday was a day of action for fast-food workers. It was also the day when the NFL and the players union announced an agreement to settle the lawsuits about concussions. There’s a link, and it’s not a pretty one. Actually, there’s a small link and a big link, but they’re different sides of the same strange […]
Whatever you think of the situation in Syria, and what the US response should be, and whether you think the US should respond at all, there’s almost certainly a cartoon somewhere on the topic that you’ll agree with. The gang is all over the place on this one.I’m leading off with Drew Sheneman’s offering, because […]
I said before that the Danny-Goes-To-University theme at Between Friends was going to be a rich vein for Sandra Bell Lundy, and it is proving to be just that.I also said then that she had set Kim up well, since Kim is not overly neurotic as a parent and so the issue can unfold on […]
Several cartoonists commented on the lack of progress in the half-century since the March on Washington and MLK’s iconic “I Have A Dream” speech. I like Chan Lowe’s take because of its blandness.Start here: To say there has been no progress is to reveal your ignorance of the status quo in 1963.I guess some of […]
