Starting, for a change, with the Juxtaposition of the Day: (The New Adventures of Queen Victoria) (Blondie)Normally, I save the Juxtaposition of the Day for the end, sort of a “Moment of Zen” thing (don’t worry, you’ll get one), but these two strips tie into my recent theme of unscrupulous efforts to capitalize on people’s […]
PC & Pixel not only picks up on a couple of pet peeves of mine — crappy, unnecessary Hollywood remakes and phony “archival” film — but reawakens some paranoia, in turn reminding me of the old graffito, “Even paranoids have some enemies.”Or, put another way, it reminds me of something I wrote nearly 20 years […]
Kevin Kallaugher has the best cartoon to date on our current economic situation: Fun art, simple concept, nice use of visual sarcasm and graphic metaphor.Even if you no longer read the paper, if you’ve been looking at political cartoons, you’ve seen references to the study behind it. The coverage boils it down to the fact […]
Let’s warm up with a little outright foolishness, courtesy of Bizarro.A couple of things to note here: One is that, while good art won’t sell a bad gag, it can sure enhance a silly one. Dan Piraro’s ability to draw the crowd under the feeder with a modicum of realism is much of what makes […]
God is for Sunday. All righteous people know that. At least, it sure seems that those who bang the Bible loudest on street corners are the same ones who believe that people who go to church on Saturday now are among the people who will be going to Hell on Judgment Day.Well, I was headed […]
I’ve mentioned this before, but GoComics is now featuring “Origins of the Sunday Comics,” selections from a history of the same being compiled by Peter Maresca and, as GoComics says, available in “all of their full, broadsheet-sized glory in the new book from Sunday Press: Society is Nix, Gleeful Anarchy at the Dawn of the […]
Flash from the Past: The Stripper’s Guide has a discursion on “The Nebbishes,” which I discovered via a tip from Mike Lynch and then expanded through some surfing around whereby I came up with the above example at a blog called “It’s A Cat,” though they aren’t cats. They’re nebbishes, a Yiddish term for a […]
So the cartoons are coming in, the weepers and the “Congress does nothings” and the “What will it takes?”Yes, what will it take? What will it take before we quit lying to ourselves and pretending we care?Jimmy Margulies got it right. In fact, as newspapers seek ways to cut costs, I think they could benefit […]
I see new people everywhere, starting with a Superhero that Kim, or Sandra Lundy, has been developing for several weeks over at Between Friends. It’s been interesting to have the process be part of the strip, and, to be honest, it’s a good choice to show it this way, because I’m not sure what you […]
The issue of internships came up here Saturday in the comments section, and it’s a hot topic I had already intended to take up, which I’ll do now, starting with Heart of the City, where Dean is no longer up to the task of fulfilling Heart’s every whim and she seeks a new go-fer.The punchline […]
Real Life Adventures indeed. The only thing more dreaded than an all-hands meeting these days is that age-old perennial one: An invitation to coffee in a public place. Of course, that latter situation is sometimes a relief. I’ve sipped from the fatal cup of joe twice and, in both cases, I kind of knew it was […]
Ruben Bolling riffs on one of the more puzzling and ultimately depressing aspects of “those darned kids” — the way 18-to-20s are treated as half-citizens. And he’s right in his “what if it were any other demographic?” reductio. My question is, is this a call to arms for the 18-to-20s, or is he asking everyone to […]
So the latest thing is using fingerprints instead of passwords, and passwords will now become as passé as blogs and laptops, according to the Great Gods of Silicon. Which is like Gatorade announcing that it has some great new flavors and the basic green flavor simply isn’t cool anymore, except that there aren’t a lot […]
(EDITOR’S NOTE: The editorial-cartooning wing of comics is temporarily out of service due to half of the commentary being 9/11 Hallmark cards and the other half evenly divided between those that are woefully outdated and irrelevant due to the Russian proposal and those consisting of laments, partisan gainsaying and outright tantrums from cartoonists pissed that […]
One of the advantages of web commentary over syndicated commentary is the speed with which you can change directions. It’s a little unclear where things are going in Syria, and, while people determined to hold onto their set opinions don’t have a problem, rethinking an issue on deadline can get tricky.Still, a few syndicated cartoonists […]
