We’re Back! Lessons Learned, Please Take Note

There’s still a lot of unknowns about how/why The Daily Cartoonist was taken offline for nearly 36 hours—at least officially. What we do know is Hostwinds, where we host TDC, took everything offline after discovering a breach in their systems. Circumstantially, I suspect this might be related to the new security flaw that was discovered in the PHP language upon which 70% of the internet runs. The “FBI and the National Security Agency to European cybersecurity authorities and Australian intelligence agencies all recommended that websites go dark until they could implement the patches.”

As of tonight, we’re back up. I have my list of lessons learned. The one I hope you readers take is to make sure your website or hosting company has the latest version of PHP with the patch. When multiple national governments are sounding the alarm telling everyone how to avoid being affected by a global threat, it’s worth listening to. This time, you don’t even have to wear a mask.

  1. I’m going to blame the pop-up ads that have made reading TDC impossible on my android phone.
