June Brigman, Patrick McDonnell – Comic Strippers Interviewed

June Brigman, Comic Artist

June Brigman joins Mike Manley, Jamar Nicholas, and Steve Conley‘s Pencil to Pencil podcast this week.

Brigman has been drawing Mary Worth for ten years and drew Brenda Starr from 1995-2011 before that though she is probably best known for her Power Pack comic books. She is currently drawing “The Pale” comic book for Mad Cave. Brenda Starr doesn’t come up but she does discuss her Mary Worth work at around the 56½ minute mark for a few minutes, saying it takes her 2 or three days to draw the week (husband Roy Richardson inks and letters the strip and colors the Sundays). She describes her work there as “competent.” She enjoys getting a little weirdness in the strip such as the coming Sunday which she talks about.

Patrick McDonnell, Comic Artist and Peanuts Fan

Patrick McDonnell joins Michael Cohen, Jimmy Gownley, Howard Buchholz, and Liz Sumner on their podcast Unpacking Peanuts – listen to the podcast here or read the transcript here.

Partly to praise Charles M. Schulz and partly to promote his new MUTTS collections.

Patrick: “Yeah, I’m really excited by this and very happy with it, but Abrams Books is going to start like the, the Mutts library of Sunday pages. It’s called the Mutts Sunday Funnies. And the first two volumes are coming out, this October. Volume one and volume two, which is the first four years of Mutts. Actually, the first four and a half years of Mutts. Mutts started in September 94. So it’s the first four and a half years worth of Mutts Sunday pages. But it’s in, it’s. I have to say it’s the best looking books I’ve ever done. The design of them are just really gorgeous. They’re like 5 inches by 12 inches. So they’re like long thin horizontal hardcover books. And each, when with each two volumes there’s gonna also be a box set. So you can get these really nice looking little boxes that the first two volumes go in.”

“[T]here’s a tribute guide perfect to actually know what each title panel was based on. And I have to say it was a lot of work because I didn’t keep records.”

After talking MUTTS they get around to discussing some Peanuts strips that McDonnell had picked out.

“I picked this for many reasons, but again, when you look at those six panels of her dancing. Call it dancing. I Mean, they’re just perfect. Like Elaine Bendix before– Elaine from Seinfeld.”

“It’s just so funny. And then the punchline, my God, like, does nothing. That it cost her dad $12.00. The way she says that with the biggest smile on her face.”
