Early Look at This Week’s Comics
Skip to commentsCartoonists Lineup: Keith Knight, Howie Noel, Jonathan Lemon, Vic Lee, Daniel Shelton, Liniers, and Carol Lay.

Keith Knight tells us in this week’s The K Chronicles that he has been at this cartooning business for 35 years (as a professional, he’s been cartooning since childhood). As Dr. Knight tells us appreciators of art, even comic art, we will probably live longer. As for the cartoonists themselves, well…
Anyway, let’s enjoy some comic art.
While Knight begins his 36th year Dick Tracy is beginning his 91st year with a new artist drawing his comic strip. Yeah, we’ve mentioned Howie Noel taking on the art duties before (we broke the news), but we want to note the start today. We will mention the artistic switch again if the Tribune Content Agency (TCA) syndicate ever issues a press release about it.
Comic Books on The Funny Pages

HC Noel again as he notes that, Believe It or Not, the splash page of Iron Man’s debut in Tales of Suspense #39 drawn by Don Heck earlier this year sold for 3 and 7/8ths million dollars. Which is petty change to the one-percenters like Cark Barks‘ Scrooge McDuck who was featured in today’s Thatababy.
We will note that Noel got his credit on the Dick Tracy GoComics page and the TCA page quickly (Comics Kingdom is still running the five-year-old Joe Staton credit) while still not getting credit for his Ripley’s work at GoComics or on Ripley’s cartoon home page, which I assume is a Ripley Corp choice.
Strangeness

I am used to Vic Lee regularly including large word balloons or multiple balloons in his panels to hold his usually wordy gag lines but I don’t remember ever seeing him split a balloon like he did today. I kind of like the way the last line at the bottom ran into the first line of the top.
As for Daniel Shelton – I don’t know about Canadian watermelons but as a kid here in California when we stole watermelons on our way to go swimming in the ditch or the river we dug out the heart of the watermelon because that was where the seeds weren’t, exactly the opposite of Mia’s melon.
A Aye Eye PSA
Liniers took a break from his always lighthearted Macanudo comic to give a warning to mankind. AI is the topic of the year and I encourage cartoonists to keep the machinations of those one-percenters in the public eye.
It seemed at least a dozen comics had AI as a subject today.
Old Hollywood Trivia

For the third week in a row Carol Lay is using her 9 grid Lay Lines as an American fumetti style page to impart Old Hollywood trivia to us fans of Old Hollywood and I couldn’t be happier with it – well, if she gets around to some of the classic comedians.
The hope is she continues with these OLD Hollywood profiles for the indefinite future.
