The Sunday Funnies Jam
Skip to commentsWhile Bill Griffith has always bled his personal life into the Zippy comic strips I am enjoying the more frequent breaking down of the 4th wall and his giving us more behind the scenes insights since he’s begun his graphic novel autobiography. As he did this past Monday:
Truth be told the “selfie” comic strips are more comprehensible to me than the normal(?) Zippy strips.
Liõ Speaks!
Far, far less often than Griffy appearing in Zippy is Liô speaking. In the past it has happened in relation to Charlie Brown and the Peanuts animated specials moving from broadcast to pay TV.

This week the Liõ strip had the character uttering words and while holiday related not Peanuts related:
The Saturday Gil Thorp looks good in color (haven’t seen it in black and white) and deserves recognition, but… I would have liked to see the QB in the third panel pass the ball while going down in the grasp of the defensive lineman for the sake of sequential continuity.
Title Panels
Deon Parson gets a shout-out to a number of his cartooning friends in the title panel of today’s Rosebuds – I recognize about half of them. The banned book story started last Sunday and I am enjoying it, as I do most anything that brings the idiocy of government censorship to the forefront of public attention.

A new Sunday Phantom story (“The Man of the Match”) brings with it a new title panel for The Phantom.
While Prince Valiant and Aleta’s return to the Misty Isles five weeks ago ended one adventure and began a new storyline and with that was a change in the Prince Valiant title panel, but not a new illustration.

The Misty Isles harbor shot was first seen eight years ago.
From the past to the future with title panels.

Tomorrow sees Howie Noel begin his run as Dick Tracy artist and next Sunday will see a new Dick Tracy Sunday title panel with the new credits. The grim face is replaced with a smiling Tracy, perhaps reflecting the joy Noel is experiencing being allowed to draw his favorite comic strip on a regular basis.
By the way…

Today is the 95th anniversary since the Dick Tracy comic strip debuted on Oct. 4, 1931. We would provide a gallery and brief historical overview but Peter Bosch at 13th Dimension did that for us.
Public Domain Dick Tracy: On January 1, 2027 the first 3 months of Dick Tracy become public domain!
We’re used to seeing Steve McGarry’s portayals of pop culture people in his Biographic series, but today we get a look at his caricaturing talents as he scrambles some famous authors in KidTown.
