Cathy Wilcox Says Goodbye to Sydney Morning Herald Readers

Readers of Nine Entertainment’s The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age newspapers were greeted Friday morning with the papers’ longtime editorial cartoonist Cathy Wilcox‘s farewell cartoon.
In an article bidding Wilcox farewell The Sydney Morning Herald (or here) wrote:
Award-winning cartoonist Cathy Wilcox has been drawing cartoons for the Herald since 1989. For four days a week for almost a decade her illustrations have appeared at the top of the Letters pages.
Her last day was on August 28, with her Sydney colleagues paying tribute to her 37 years of capturing the daily news cycle with wit, humour and intellect. Wilcox said her goal was to always produce cartoons that were founded in truth.
Wilcox said:
“My cartoon today [her final cartoon on the Letters page] was long and wordy, but was my shortest summation of a lifetime at the Herald. It has been the best career and the only place I ever wanted to work … It’s been and a wonderful ride.”
The paper’s valediction was followed by scores of well-wishes from readers saddened by her departure.
On her Facebook page Wilcox wrote:
Regarding Cathy’s departure from The Age & Sydney Morning Herald newspapers, and questions about whether she will continue to publish work:
“Cathy’s application for a position in a silent monastic order in the Alps was rejected as even left in a room alone, within ten minutes she was engaged in a passionate discourse with a ficus. Seeing no other alternative, she’ll be back making public comment somewhere soon.”

Cathy Wilcox first drew spot illustrations for The Sydney Morning Herald in 1988.
By the following year she had become a regular presence in the newspaper’s pages illustrating articles and drawing spots for columns … and cartoons.
By the mid-1990s a year end review of Wilcox cartoons had become an annual event.
