Tel Aviv Political Cartoon Exhibit Damaged

Hannah Brown for The Jerusalem Post reports Exhibition of Ultra-Orthodox Military Draft Cartoons Vandalized:

An exhibition of political cartoons about the exemption of the ultra-Orthodox from military service was vandalized on Monday ahead of the opening of the Animix International Animation, Cartoon and Comics Festival at the Tel Aviv Cinematheque.

The festival, which opened on Tuesday, traditionally addresses major social issues through animation and political cartoons. One of this year’s featured exhibitions, titled “The Black Army,” focuses on haredi (ultra-Orthodox) opposition to military conscription and includes works by many of Israel’s leading cartoonists.

According to the festival organizers, while the exhibition was being installed in the plaza outside the Tel Aviv Cinematheque on Monday, a young man wearing a kippah confronted organizers and Tel Aviv Cinematheque CEO Tomer Cohen. They said he tore down and damaged parts of the exhibition before attempting to flee…

  2. Let me get this straight. He protested against committing violence by committing violence? Religious nuts aren’t noted for consistency in logic.

    1. The lines are as follows:

      Ultra Orthodox Jews have historically been exempt from national service, and receive stipends to study Torah.

      From time to time, it is noted that they are not doing the same work to build the state as other Israelis.

      Cartoons on the subject tend to take the position that the ultra orthodox should not be exempt from service, and this is a position they violently oppose.

      They are not pacifists, they simply regard the state that pays them to sit on their butts and study all day as illegitimate because it arose through human action and does not implement biblical law.
