In a column today for The Chronicle Herald editorial cartoonist Bruce MacKinnon says “I’m not retiring, but . . .” (or here).
August 10 will mark my 40th full-time year with this newspaper. Although quitting drawing cartoons would be a bit like cutting off my right hand (something that would be hard not to notice and I’d likely regret doing), like the wily veteran on the Monday night pickup hockey team, I do feel the need to cut back my ice time a bit so that I can still give 110 per cent and get pucks deep.
After 50 years of drawing cartoons, with the last 40 as the staff cartoonist for The Chronicle Herald, MacKinnon has decided that his regular output will be irregular:
So while I continue to wear my pencil down to the nub and scrawl my way to endurance records, I’m loosening the shackle that connects my ankle to the drawing board only slightly, so that I miss fewer sunny days like the one I’m missing as I write this.
In the coming months and years there will be weeks when I have four cartoons in the paper, some when I have two or three, and some when I have none. But rest assured I’m still on the team, working with some world class journalists and honing my backhand for the playoffs.
