Pat Bagley Receives Lifetime Achievement Award

The Utah Chapter of the Society of Professional Journalists (SPJ) has shown their respect for Salt Lake Tribune editorial cartoonist Pat Bagley with their Lifetime Achievement Award.

The Utah Headliners awards ceremony took place June 11, 2026.

Pat Bagley presented with the Utah Headliners Lifetime Achievement Award

While Pat is in Portugal he did send his appreciation through an emissary:

Last Thursday the Utah SPJ (Soc. Prof. Journalists) gave me a Lifetime Achievement Award. I wasn’t there to accept, but my partner for life Kate Hahn shared my acceptance:

Good evening. I want to thank SPJ for this award. I am deeply honored for this recognition of my long career. But the real prize I take away from a half century in a newsroom is the privilege of being associated with journalists—people like you who care.

My journalistic spirit animal is George Orwell.

He once wrote that “In a time of universal deceit, telling the truth is a revolutionary act.” We’re now living through just such a time: You didn’t see what you saw. You didn’t hear what you heard. You don’t know what you know.

Our job as journalists today is vitally important. It is also simple: tell the truth. Be a witness to reality. That’s it.

Finally, from Lisbon, I just want to say, boa noite e boa sorte.

Good night and good luck

Congratulations to Pat who, speaking of lifetimes, is the longest continuously employed full-time editorial cartoonist in America! On staff at The Salt Lake Tribune since 1979.

While I can find individual newspaper results of the Utah Headliner Awards I am not finding a complete list.

Full disclosure: Pat Bagley is the cartoonist responsible for those caricatures of The Daily Cartoonist contributors
